Volume 2 · Letter 216

By the grace of Hashem,

19 Tammuz 5708,

To the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav C., the shochet*,

I greet and bless you,

Your son-in-law, Rav Y. Goodman, conveyed your questions to me and I herewith respond:

A) What is the source of the following statement of our Sages, cited by the Ramban* in his commentary on the verse Bereishit 2:9: 'Three spoke the truth and were lost — the serpent, the spies, and Doeg the Edomite'?

It appears that the source is Midrash Pirkei Rabbenu HaKadosh*, chapter 3, paragraph 47. However, the Ramban's version differs from the one available to us. The version I was able to consult, at the end of the Colbo* and in the Otzar HaMidrashim* of Eisenstein, reads as follows: 'Three spoke the truth and were lost from this world and from the World to Come. They are the spies, Doeg, and the inhabitants of Raman HaBe'erot.'

In this regard:

1. The Alter Rebbe* also cites this explanation in a letter dated the Tuesday of Parshat Nitzavim 5571, printed in chapter 20 of Beth Rabbi*. However, it is impossible to know which version he had, since he cites only what pertains to the point he is developing, namely the case of Doeg.

2. No objection can be raised against this statement from that of Midrash Bereishit Rabbah*, chapter 19, which says the serpent spoke a lie. For both are true. The serpent was lost because it had spoken the truth, but in order to convince Chavah* it also lied. You should also consult the chassidic discourses* entitled 'the serpent was cunning' in Torah Or* and in Torat Chaim*.

B) You wonder why, in the many letters you have seen, the day of the week is not mentioned and only the calendar date is cited. Yet the Ramban, commenting on the verse Shemot 20:8, says that 'Jews count the days in relation to Shabbat*. Sunday is the first day after Shabbat, Monday the second. This is how we fulfill the mitzvah* of remembering Shabbat each day.'

It seems to me that there is no difficulty here:

1. It is clear, even according to the Ramban, that this is not a mitzvah applying throughout the entire day, as is the case with Torah* study. It therefore suffices to remember Shabbat once, which one does in the Shir shel yom* [daily song].

2. In my humble opinion, it is clear that the Ramban does not intend to oblige us to count each day with respect to Shabbat. He indicates only that if one comes to count the days, one must do so in relation to Shabbat. The same applies to the mitzvah of the parapet*. And when the Ramban specifies 'each day,' he means that one does not remember it only on Shabbat or on its eve. That is why the counting of days in the Written Torah* is not done in relation to Shabbat, as tractate Rosh Hashana 3a states.

3. It further appears that the Ramban's view was not accepted. For he forbids counting the days in any manner other than in relation to Shabbat. Yet I have never seen any opinion forbidding the use of the words 'Sunday' and 'Monday.'

Young men who are our emissaries are currently in your city. They are the Hashem-fearing chassidim*, Rav A. Michtilim and Rav N. Gur Aryeh, who have surely spoken with you about the talks of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* shlita*, and about the great importance of such journeys.

I am confident that, despite all your occupations, you will assist them and endeavor to make this visit, in your city and its surrounding region, very fruitful in every detail, material and spiritual. I write to you on this subject only to underscore all of the above.

I close wishing you all the good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

I have also found a trace of the statement of our Sages concerning the three who spoke the truth, in Machzor Vitry*, in a manuscript passage printed at the end of Menorat HaMaor* by Rabbi I. Elncaoua, vol. 4, p. 568, which says: 'Three confessed the truth and were lost from this world and the World to Come. They are Doeg the Edomite, the inhabitants of Raman HaBe'erot, and the spies. Rabbi Meir includes also the descendant of Amalek.'

In the notes to this text are cited Avot deRabbi Natan*, version B, chapter 45; Pirkei Rabbenu HaKadosh*, 27a, Shenblum edition, in three volumes; and Eked HaAggadot*, Horovits edition, chapter 133.
