With the help of Hashem
19 Elul* 5715
Brooklyn
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, of fine character, Rav Dov Yehuda (1),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 14 Elul, although I must be brief due to the specific content of the present period. Indeed, you know the saying (2) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, according to which, within the month of moral reckoning that is Elul, the days following 18 Elul more specifically allow one to take stock of the months of the year, each day corresponding to one month.
Despite this, given the personality of the one who poses the question and the importance of the subject, I send you these few lines, which are concise but will surely enable you to understand what I mean. Please excuse me for this.
A) You ask about what the Tanya* says at the end of chapter 8 regarding the secular sciences. Does it refer only to philosophy, or to all sciences in general?
It seems that you consider a distinction should be made. Thus, the study of philosophy would be forbidden because of the concepts it contains that offend the faith, which would not be the case with mathematics, for example.
In fact, it is quite clear that the Tanya makes no distinction among the secular sciences. One can first establish this by observing that it speaks of "sciences" in the plural. Furthermore, it says that the impurity of these sciences emanates from Kelipas Nogah* (3). It does not therefore refer to heresy — an absolute prohibition linked to the three completely impure Kelipos*, in the same way as everything related to idolatry.
The Tanya also says that one can make of these sciences "an axe to chop with" (4). All of this is expressed even more clearly in the Laws of Torah Study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 3, paragraph 7.
B) You cite the talk of the Shabbos* that blessed the month of Elul, in which it was said that a person cannot jump into fire inadvertently. You are surprised by this statement, but you do not specify the reason for your astonishment.
Perhaps you mean that one can imagine someone standing on a high roof and jumping, because in that case he is not aware of falling into fire. But that is not what I was alluding to, and such an action is not truly done inadvertently. I simply meant that to protect oneself from sin, reflection is not necessary. Natural feeling suffices.
Thus, a child, even if he has not reached intellectual maturity, will not jump into fire. Indeed, he feels from a distance that the sensation of heat is uncomfortable, and this suffices for him not to approach the fire. This is not a reasoned reaction but a natural act.
In general, every concept of the revealed dimension of the Torah* is explained in an even more profound manner by its hidden and esoteric teaching. Similarly, every idea of Chassidus* finds its equivalent in the revealed dimension of the Torah, which indeed speaks in this regard of an animal that has gone mad (5).
Consult, on this subject, in particular Avos DeRabbi Nosson*, chapter 16, and Tractate* Bava Kama* 62b.
C) You discuss the reason and purpose of the punishments of the Torah. Chassidus explains that their purpose is to repair the defect caused by the transgression.
This defect concerns the person who committed the transgression and everything connected to him, as well as the influence he exerts on his surroundings. The repair must therefore be evident in both of these domains.
The repair concerning others, in the verses you cite, is "so that they will hear and see" (6). Consult the note in chapter 24 of the Tanya and the Likkutei Torah*, Bamidbar*, pages 25c and 86b.
D) You seek to reconcile the views of the early thinkers of Israel regarding the body of angels. You suggest that all share the same conception and differ only in their definition of body.
It is impossible to consider that there is no disagreement in this matter. Indeed, according to one view, angels exist within the dimension of space, as the Likkutei Torah explains at length in the first Chassidic discourse entitled "A song, a chant for the inauguration." According to the second view, however, no distinction can be made, regarding them, between body and spirit, so that they are "separate intellects" (7). Consult, on this subject, the Rambam*, Laws of the Foundations of the Torah, chapter 2, from paragraph 3 onward, with commentaries.
You envision that they might have a more elevated body. This does not correspond to what is said at the same reference, paragraph 5, nor in the Guide for the Perplexed*, volume 2, chapter 3. This question is also raised by the Tzafnas Pane'ach*, on the Yerushalmi*, chapter 2 of Tractate Chagigah*, paragraph 4.
On the occasion of the new year which approaches, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I extend my blessing, to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.
With my blessing,
(1) Rav D. Y. Shochat. See, regarding him, Letter #3485.
(2) See, on this subject, Letter #3780.
(3) The force of evil that retains the possibility of elevation.
(4) An instrument for earning a livelihood. It therefore cannot refer to heresy.
(5) And which can then throw itself into fire, whereas it would not do so if it were normal, even though an animal is incapable of reasoning.
(6) To serve as an example.
(7) From all corporeal existence.
