With the help of Hashem

Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the 10th of the month of mercy (1), in which you pose the following questions:
A) In what manner does one carry out the service of Hashem during this period?
The service of Hashem in general and teshuvah* in particular depend on the personality and nature of each individual. One therefore cannot formulate absolute principles in this matter. In general terms, you should strive to meet those who teach Chassidus* in the Holy Land (2). Based on their experience, acquired with hundreds of students and young people, and on what they themselves received from their own masters, they will tell you what should be done.
Among the books of Chassidus, one is particularly suited to this period. It is the Derech Chaim*, by the Mitteler Rebbe*, although, in the words of the Alter Rebbe* in the introduction to the Tanya*: "Seeing and reading books cannot be compared to the teaching one receives orally. Indeed, the intellect of one person will remain indifferent to what arouses enthusiasm in another." Consult this text.
And you know the teaching of our Sages* that says: "Acquire for yourself a companion (3)."
B) You mention ritual immersion in the Mikveh* and you cite someone who told you that when a certain person goes to the Mikveh, he accomplishes nothing because he acts mechanically.
This statement contradicts the Halachah* and even constitutes a misinterpretation of the Mishnah*, in Tractates* Chagigah* 18b, Chulin* 31a, and in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah*, end of chapter 198.
Certainly, concentrating on what one does when immersing in a Mikveh is very important, and the Siddur* (4), in the Chassidic discourse entitled "On the intention of the Mikveh," specifies: "It does not suffice to immerse. One must also be permeated with the profound purpose of this act, which is moral submission" (5).
C) Concerning going to the Mikveh before prayer, consult the Siddur at the previously cited reference.
One can also propose an explanation based on the revealed teaching of the Torah*, that of the Rashba*, cited by the Magen Avraham*, at the beginning of chapter 4. This commentary compares the person who rises in the morning to a Kohen* preparing for the service of Hashem (6), which began with a ritual immersion. This is also what the Mishnah states in Tractate Yoma* 30a.
D) You also mention a Chassidic gathering* and observe that what is consumed there is not essential.
This is self-evident. The purpose of such a gathering is to awaken to Torah and mitzvos*, with enthusiasm, joy, and bitterness at the same time. However, our Sages observe that "eating together is significant, for it brings people closer." One can verify concretely that this is indeed so, even though one must naturally remain vigilant.
One can also deduce this from a negative example. Indeed, our Sages have forbidden, in Tractate Shabbos* 17b, drinking the wine of non-Jews, for one who does so could eventually adopt their beliefs. How much more so in the positive domain. Indeed, all are serving the one Hashem, loving Him, fearing Him, and knowing Him.
For this, one must study the inner teaching of the Torah, as the Rambam* alludes to in his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah, at the beginning of the second chapter: "How does one come to love Him and fear Him?" The same statement is found in the Chovos HaLevavos*, Gate of Unification, and the Alter Rebbe, in the Kuntres Acharon* of the Tanya, page 156b, says: "Knowing that there exists a chain of worlds is also an important and lofty mitzvah*. Moreover, it surpasses all others, as it is said: 'And you shall know today...' 'Know the Elokim* of your father.' It enables one to have an upright heart, which is fundamental."
May Hashem grant that you meditate on all of this in the proper manner and, above all, that these words have a concrete effect, leading you to study Chassidus, to follow its usages and practices.
With my blessing that you give good news regarding all of this and that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
Some of your friends, students of the same Yeshivah* (7) as you, surely pose the same questions. If you convey to them, in the proper manner, the content of these answers, they will no longer face these difficulties.
