With the help of Hashem

18 Elul* 5715

Brooklyn

To the directors of the Yeshivah Tomchei Temimim* (1), may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

This luminous day is that of the birth of the two great luminaries — the Baal Shem Tov* and the Alter Rebbe*.

Furthermore, we have had the merit of receiving the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* (2), according to which, beginning from 18 Elul, each day is devoted to the reckoning of one month of the year (3).

Now, the beginning of a process includes everything within it. In this case, 18 Elul allows one to take stock of Tishrei*, a month of general import for the entire year.

It is therefore incumbent upon each person, particularly on this date, to meditate on the reckoning of the days, weeks, and months that have passed. The purpose of such a reckoning is, of course, to draw lessons from the past for the future, in the two domains of the service of Hashem — the Injunctions "Turn away from evil" and "Do good."

If the obligation of this reckoning applies to each individual, how much more is it a duty for those capable of influencing their immediate or distant circle, in all the domains for which the merit of the public depends on them.

How much more is this the case when this influence pertains to the education of Jewish children.

Children are the pillar and foundation of many generations, as it is said: "For I have known him (4), so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of Hashem."

Like any moral reckoning, this one must be accurate and not deviate in any direction. We are particularly enjoined to guard against the deception resulting from the fact that "self-love conceals all faults." Many means and counsels have been given to avoid falling into this trap.

Regarding education, the most effective way is to observe its consequences, draw lessons from them, and deduce what in the current practice must be corrected, eliminated, improved, or added.

In light of all this, I propose that such a moral reckoning be carried out for the educational institution whose direction Divine Providence has entrusted to you. I have good hope that this reckoning will be truthful, in accordance with what has been said. And to guard against any deviation, one should reflect on the consequences of the education you provide — the fruits it has borne during all the years this school has existed in your city.

How many students have remained in the tent of Torah* — its revealed dimension and Chassidus*? How many of them have adopted, in their homes and in their external activities, conduct in keeping with the instructions of the founders of the Yeshivah, our holy masters, and with their hopes? How many of them observe the Torah and the mitzvos* in the proper manner?

The same should be done for the students of the younger classes, whose contact information has surely been preserved in the records of the Yeshivah. One should therefore count those who pursued their studies at the Yeshivah through the completion of the curriculum, and those who remained only long enough to then turn toward other studies or occupations not belonging to the domain of holiness.

As for teshuvah* — sincere regret for what has transpired — now is the time for each individual to act personally. In contrast, the decisions to be taken for the future belong to a domain of general import, upon which the merit of the public depends — or that which goes against this merit. From this, one can deduce the great responsibility incumbent upon each of the directors and, in particular, upon the actual administrators. On the one hand, theirs is an immense merit. On the other hand...

It is certain that our masters, the founders of the Yeshivah, infuse the considerable forces needed by all those who participate in its proper functioning. Moreover, they invoke Divine mercy so that their efforts be crowned with immense success, beyond what these forces alone can accomplish.

It is clear that if certain matters until now have not been at the level they should have been, have not conformed to the objective and purpose set by our master — the intermediary who connects this institution and its students to the Essence of Hashem — the problem can only emanate from those who receive (5). Indeed, it is said that "only an empty vessel can be filled" (6).

In light of the well-known saying about 18 Elul — the date that enlivens the service of Hashem of this month, with all the allusions one discovers in its name (7) — may Hashem grant that each person meditate on everything that has been said, applying it to his own self, doing so sincerely. In this way, one will be able to enliven the bitterness that might result from this (8), to have the enthusiasm and the ardor that will enable one to improve, in the proper manner, what must be improved and to add to this institution everything that can be added.

In this way, you will surely observe the fruits of your effort. You will raise students to whom one can rightly bestow the title chosen by the founder of the Yeshivah Tomchei Temimim: "Candles to illuminate."

I extend my blessing for success in conducting this reckoning, in reaching truthful conclusions, and above all in directing the Yeshivah in the future. I also wish you to be able to give good news of all of this as soon as possible, and to be inscribed and sealed for a good year.
