To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Moshe (1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your undated letter, in which you discuss the educational system in the Yeshivos* in general, in the elementary Yeshivos in particular, and their study program.

In this, you echo the great figures of our people who have already lamented such a situation, in numerous books, for several hundred years. From time to time, during Chassidic gatherings* or on various occasions, I myself emphasize the imperative need to know the laws one practices daily (2), to introduce the study of the tractates of the Order of Moed* or of Tractate* Berachos* into the curriculum of the Yeshivos.

Consult the introduction of the sons of the Alter Rebbe* to his Shulchan Aruch*. The order of study is defined precisely therein. Certainly, a growing awareness has been observed recently, but of course this is far from sufficient.

However, one must not become discouraged, Heaven forbid. One must warn, repeat a second, then a third time. And our holy masters, leaders of Israel, specify that "effort is never in vain."

Although you say nothing of this, you surely have a fixed study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. Likewise, you maintain, or at least will henceforth maintain, the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These pertain to Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known.

As you request, I will mention all those you cite in your letter at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

On the occasion of the new year which approaches, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I extend my blessing, to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו - בלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב אודות מצב החינוך בישיבות ובישיבות קטנות וביחוד ע"ד תכנית הלימודים.

והנה כיוון לדעת הגדולים כי כבר צווחו קמאי על דא וכמובא בכו"כ ספרם זה כבר מאות בשנים, ומזמן לזמן הנני מעורר בעת התועדות והזדמנויות שונות על ההכרח הכי גדול בלימוד הלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים בהכנסת המסכתות סדר מועד ומס' ברכות בסדרי לימוד הישיבות וכו', ויעוין בהקדמת בני רבנו הזקן להשו"ע שלו שמבואר שם סדרי לימוד מפורט, ואף שנראית הזזה בזמן האחרון, הנה מובן שאיננה מספיקה כלל וכלל, אבל בטח שאין זה צריך לפעול רגש של יאוש ח"ו וצריך לעורר ולכפול ולשלש בזה וידוע פסק רבוה"ק נשיאי ישראל שחזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם.

בודאי - אף שאינו מזכיר עד"ז - יש לו שיעורים בלימוד תורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות ושומר - או עכ"פ ישמור מכאן ולהבא - שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.

כבקשתו אזכיר את כל אלו שכותב אודותם במכתבו, על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
