With the help of Hashem

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of many accomplishments, Rav David Nathan (1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have received your request for a blessing, which will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

You tell me that you will marry on the luminous day of 18 Elul (2), a date which, in accordance with an ancient saying transmitted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe (3), is also the one that enlivens the service of Hashem of the month of Elul.

This service of Hashem includes all its possible forms, divided into three categories (4). First, Torah* study, since the initial letters of the verse (5) "He placed in his hand, and I will set for you" form the name Elul. Now, our Sages* say in Tractate* Makkos* 10a that "one can take refuge in the words of the Torah." The verse "I am to my Beloved and my Beloved is to me," which also forms the name Elul, alludes to prayer. Finally, the Arugas HaBosem* also cites the verse "one to his friend and gifts to the poor," which itself forms the name Elul, corresponding to good deeds. The foundation of all of this and its introduction is teshuvah*, alluded to in the verse (Devarim* 30:6): "your heart and the heart," once again forming the name Elul, as the Baal HaTurim* observes.

May Hashem grant that for many more years you announce joyful news to me regarding all of this, for yourself and for all the members of your family, materially and spiritually alike.

On the occasion of the new year which approaches, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I extend my blessing, to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

הנה יה"ר שעוד רבות בשנים יודיע בשורות משמחות בהנוגע להנ"ל הוא בעצמו וכל ב"ב שיחיו הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.

ולקראת השנה החדשה הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לו ולכל אשר לו, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
