Greetings and blessings,

You mention the spiritual awakening of the month of Elul. As you know, the Likkutei Torah*, Re'eh*, page 32b, explains that during these days, all can receive the King, Who greets each person with benevolence. Everything therefore depends solely on your will. Nevertheless, the evil inclination* carries out its mission effectively, even though in reality it wishes itself to be defeated, as the Tanya* specifies at the end of chapter 29. It therefore attempts to convince each person that the trials he faces are so severe that it is impossible to overcome them.

You tell me that you have asked several people, but that no one has yet explained to you how this is possible. You should therefore consult the Tanya, chapter 26, and Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapters 11 and 22. What is said in these texts will suffice, if you do not allow your evil inclination to convince you that this does not apply to your own case.

In general, highlighting one's own faults, which are partly imaginary and, for the rest, exaggerated, delving into them and reflecting on all of this, is of no moral or even practical use.

This is indeed the case for you. You say that your state of health constitutes an obstacle for you. One must, of course, heed the doctor's advice and follow his prescriptions. Nevertheless, this should not affect your thought and your capacity for reflection. If you do not dwell on it, your health will also improve.

You inform me of your birthday (1). On this occasion, you will surely adopt the well-known practices. May Hashem grant that you have a year of success, materially and spiritually, that you devote yourself to what should be the object of your concern in the three domains of Torah*, prayer, and good deeds. In this way, you will heal physically and morally.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

P.S. You mention the bond (2) leading to wearing the Tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam* (3). You should consult on this matter the one who teaches you Chassidus*.

... ובמה ששואל אודות ההתעוררות דחודש אלול, הנה כבר ידוע המבואר בלקו"ת פרשת ראה לב, ב אשר בימים אלו כל אחד יכול לקבל פני המלך והוא מקבל את כל אחד בספ"י, ובמילא אין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונו, אלא כיון שהיצה"ר עוסק במלאכתו באומנתו (אף שבאמת לאמיתו גם הוא רוצה שינצחו אותו, כמובן מתניא סוף פרק כ"ט) ולכן מפתהו שדוקא הנסיונות שלו הם כאלו שאי אפשר להתגבר עליהם.

ומה שכותב ששאל בזה לכמה ולא קבל ביאור איך אפשרי הדבר, הנה יעיין בתניא פרק כ"ו, באגה"ק סי' י"א וסימן כ"ב אשר גם האמור שם מספיק, ובלבד שלא יתן להיצה"ר להסיתו אשר אין הוא בכלל זה. ובכלל השיטה דלהעמיק בצרות עצמו, אף שחלק מהם הם מעולם הדמיון ובחלק הנשאר מגזימים, הנה התבוננות והתעמקות זו אינה מביאה כל תועלת לא ברוחניות ואפילו לא בגשמיות, וה"ה בהנוגע לו שכותב שמצב הבריאות מפריע לו וכו' הנה אף שצריך לקיים הוראת הרופא ולהתנהג מתאים לפקודתו, אבל אין זה שייך לכח המחשבה וההתבוננות כלל, ובהעדר ההתבוננות הנה גם מצב הבריאות משתפר מעצמו.

ובמה שכותב אודות יום הולדת שלו, ובודאי ינהג במנהגי יום הולדת הידועים, הנה יה"ר שתהי' לו שנת הצלחה הן בענינים הגשמים והן בענינים הרוחנים ויתעסק במה שעליו להתעסק בשלשת הקוים דתורה עבודה וגמ"ח ובמילא יבריא בגשמיות וברוחניות.
