Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from this Friday, in which you tell me that you were a student of a Chabad* Yeshivah* for several years, then, for various reasons, you left it. You have good aptitude for study, but you cannot concentrate for an extended period on this activity.

I am surprised that you do not feel how dreadful all of this is. You give me various explanations for this state of affairs. Yet these are neither different nor new. They are already mentioned in our holy Torah* and they emanate from a single cause — listening to the "old and foolish king," that is, the evil inclination*, which strives to prevent a Jew from committing himself to the practice of the mitzvos* of the Holy One, blessed be He. And it is said that "the study of Torah surpasses the other Precepts."

I am surprised that you do not tell me what your current activity is. In any event, you should strive, to the fullest extent possible, to continue your studies at the Yeshivah, and it is taught that "if someone tells you he made an effort but did not succeed, do not believe him." You should study the Torah with ardor and constancy, and this depends solely on you.

May Hashem grant you a year of success in everything that has been said, and may you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

במענה על מכתבו מיום הששי, בו כותב אשר כמה שנים למד בישיבת חב"ד ומפני סיבות שונות יצא משם וכשרונותיו בלימוד טובים אבל אינו מתמיד בלימודים.

ולפלא שאינו מרגיש עד כמה מבהיל ענין כזה, ומה שמתאר הסיבות שהן סיבות שונות, הנה אינם שונות ואינם חדשות, וכבר מבוארים בתורתנו הק' שהסיבה היא אחת שנשמעים לקול מלך זקן וכסיל הוא היצה"ר המשתדל למנוע את איש הישראלי לקבל עליו מצותיו של הקב"ה אשר תלמוד תורה כנגד כולם, ותמיהני שאינו מזכיר במה מתעסק עתה, ובכל אופן ישתדל ככל יכולתו, ויגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין, להמשיך בלימודים בישיבה וילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בו, והשי"ת יתן לו שנת הצלחה בכל האמור לעיל וכתיבה וחתימה טובה.
