With the help of Hashem

Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from the end of Menachem Av, in which you tell me about your son and his studies. You conclude by posing a question prompted by the fact that he makes an effort to cover his head (1), in accordance with the requirements of our holy Torah*, Torah of life (2).
You and your wife have the good fortune of having educated your son on this path, which leads to material and spiritual happiness alike. You must also deduce from this how necessary it is to strengthen and encourage him, in this domain as in all others. One must furthermore take into account the fact that for young people, all the aspects of Yiddishkeit* combine to form a whole. If one weakens any part of this edifice, whichever it may be, it is obviously the entire edifice that is called into question (3).
Moreover, in this case, the fact of covering his head will prevent your son from taking part in a football match between two schools. In my view, one should see in this an intervention of Hashem to protect him from an unfortunate event, Heaven forbid, that could occur during this match or tournament between the two schools.
If, as you write, the fact of not participating in this competition makes a negative impression on your son, it would be good for him to leave the school he currently attends and join another, more Orthodox one, insofar as possible. Of course, it is not necessary to explain the reason to your son. In this way, he will undoubtedly forget this problem, little by little.
On this occasion, I would like to express to you my great satisfaction at the news of the positive actions you are undertaking to strengthen and develop the Yeshivah*. I am certain that my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us and whose name this Yeshivah bears, invokes Divine mercy for you and for all the members of your family, materially and spiritually alike.
With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year and that you give good news regarding all of this,
(1) See, on this subject, Letter #3712.
(2) That is, will he be able to continue doing so while pursuing his studies?
(3) Ceasing to cover one's head will have the effect of abandoning other practices as well.
