Greetings and blessings,

I became aware, some time ago, of what transpired between you and that person. It appears that he offered you an apology, but that you did not respond to him.

If all of this is accurate, it is surely unnecessary to remind you of the law of our Torah*, Torah of life, regarding a person who has been insulted and to whom an apology is offered. You know, all the more so, what is said on this topic in Chassidus*.

How much more does this apply in Elul*, when one takes stock of all the months of the past year. Despite what has occurred, the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, agrees to forgive and desires that no trace remain. Moreover, according to Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, "He agrees that one may once again behold the face of the King."

But one can well understand the response given to such a request when one adopts the opposite behavior oneself. And when it concerns an insult inflicted by a mortal being of flesh and blood, being what he is, there is no need to spell out what is perfectly obvious. Consult, on this topic, Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe, chapter 25.

זה מזמן שהגיעו אלי ידיעות ע"ד מה שקרה בינו ובין... שי', וכפי ששמעתי הנה בקשו אצלו מחילה וסליחה, וכנראה אשר לא נענה להם.

והנה אם כנה שמועה זו הרי בודאי למותר לעוררו על דין תורתנו תורת חיים, בהנוגע לאיש הנעלב כשמבקש אצלו מחילה על העלבון, ועאכו"כ המובא בזה בכ"מ בתורת החסידות, ועאכו"כ כשנמצאים אנו בימי חדש אלול שהוא חדש חשבון הנפש של כל השנה שעברה, אשר כשעושים חשבון מההנהגה במחדו"מ שלו במשך החדשים שעברו, ובכל זה מבקש מממה"מ הקב"ה שימחול ויסלח ויכפר על כל זה ולא ישאר ח"ו שום רושם ולא עוד אלא שבלשון אגרת התשובה לרבנו הזקן רפ"ב יתרצה לו לראות פני המלך כו', שמובן מעצמו פעולת הבקשה כשמתנהג באופן הפכי לגמרי, ובהנוגע לעלבון מבשר ודם מאדם כערכו כו' וכו' ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט ומובן, ועיין ג"כ אגה"ק לרבנו הזקן סי' כ"ה.

ואפשר שהשמועה הנ"ל אינה נכונה, ואחכה לבשו"ט בחוזר בכל אופן.
