I am responding to your letter from the end of Menachem Av, in which you describe the nature and the quality of the students. If you reread the copy of the letter you addressed to me, you will immediately and spontaneously agree that the purpose of the school administration and the teachers is to elevate the students of the third category to the second, and then those of both categories to the first. And the fact that some students do indeed belong to the first category makes it easier to attain this objective, so that everything depends solely on your will.

There is also another way, as you know, to achieve such a result. One must separate the worst students. It is known, on this topic, for what reason Yosef* had Shimon* arrested, and how much more must this apply in the present case.

This also provides the answer to the question you pose. You say, indeed, that the students belonging to the third category are devoid of any sensitivity for Chassidus*. Despite this, their presence in that place, and the effort in this direction that will be invested in them, will surely exert a positive influence. May Hashem grant that this be so very soon.

You speak of the boarding conditions, and perhaps this problem also explains the decline in the students' level. You should therefore formulate a detailed proposal for improving this situation, and perhaps this will have a concrete effect, within the range of possibilities. Naturally, it must not be known that the information about the situation comes from you.

You tell me that teaching in places far from inhabited areas provides an exemption from military service, and you wonder whether you should do so. You give no details on this matter. In any event, it is good for you, materially and spiritually, to take advantage of the fact that Divine Providence has led you to the place where you currently are, in order to bring it all possible elevation.

Now, if you change locations, I do not know what you will be able to accomplish in this regard, whereas in the present case, a goodly portion has been allotted to you. May Hashem grant that you rejoice in it, for it is particularly enviable. You will accomplish all of this with true joy, which will break the limitations of the coarse body and refine its materiality. Your success will be increased accordingly.

במענה על מכתבו משילהי מנ"א, בו מתאר את מהות ואיכות התלמידים ד... ובודאי כשיקרא (העתקת) מכתבו עוד הפעם, הנה יבוא להמסקנא המידית הראשונה והכי פשוטה, אשר מתפקיד ההנהלה והמורים בפרט להגבי' את הסוג השלישי לאיכות סוג השני ושניהם גם יחד לאיכות סוג הראשון. ועצם מציאות תלמידים באיכות סוג הראשון - יקל עליהם עבודה זו, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונם. וכבר ידוע אשר מסייע בזה גם כן, מה שמפרידים החברותא של תלמידים גרועים ביותר. ובמכש"כ וק"ו מהמסופר בטעם שאסר יוסף את שמעון. ומזה מובן ג"כ התרופה למה שכותב שמסוג השלישי אין להם חוש בעניני חסידות כו' וכו' - ששהותם ב... והשתדלות עמהם בכיוון זה בודאי ישפיע עליהם לטוב. ויה"ר שיהי' בקרוב ממש.

ובמ"ש אודות תנאי האש"ל וכו' שאפשר גם זה משפיע על המגרעות באיכות התלמידים, הנה יכתוב בזה הצעה מפורטת לשיפור המצב, ואפשר - כפי היכולת - תביא לשינוים ממשים. ומובן מבלי שיודע שממנו נודע המצב.

מה שמסיים במכתבו, אשר הוראה במקומות הרחוקים מן הישוב כו' פוטרת שירות - ומסופק אם עליו לעשות זאת, אינו כותב פרטים בזה. ובכל אופן הנה טוב בשבילו, הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות - שינצל זה שההשגחה העליונה הביאתו ל... שדוקא הוא יעמידו על הגובה הראוי, עכ"פ בגובה האפשרי. ואינו מובן - אם יעתיק למקום אחר מה יוכל לעשות בזה, שהוא הוא חלקו היפה. ויה"ר אשר... ושמח יהי' בחלקו הכי נעלה האמור, ויעבוד בזה מתוך שמחה אמיתית, הפורצת גדרי הגוף החומרי ומזכך את גוף הגשמי, שעי"ז גדלה ההצלחה ביותר וביותר.
