With the help of Hashem

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Shmuel Yehuda (1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Menachem Av, with what it contained. The photographs and the commentaries are being returned to you, by separate insured mailing.

In general, regarding the form of the letters (2), for example, an oral tradition exists, accompanied by illustrations, but it is difficult to explain all of this in writing in detail. You should therefore seek out, in the Holy Land, Chassidim* who have good knowledge in this domain. Perhaps it is possible to rely on those you mention, if they possess the tradition of experts and competent scribes*. You will be able to verify all of this and deduce the details accordingly.

You are considering the possibility of citing the Chabad* customs found in the pamphlets when you publish a book. It is important to specify the reference of each of these customs, that is, the pamphlet or brochure from which it is drawn. And the text must be proofread very precisely.

You mention the Tefillin* of the Shimusha Rabba* and of the Ravad* (3). The view of the Shimusha Rabba pertains to three points: the crowns placed above the letters; the measurement of two finger-widths in length and two finger-widths in width (4); and the insertion of the parchments to the right of the one wearing the Tefillin. In fact, one can also call Tefillin "Shimusha Rabba" even if they meet only one of these three criteria. However, various texts allow one to establish that for the Shimusha Rabba, the third criterion is determinative. Consult, on this subject, the responsa* of Rabbi Menachem Azarya of Fano*, the Matzas Shimurim*, the Emek HaMelech*, the Mayan HaChochma*, of the Arizal*.

The Mishmeres Shalom*, latest edition, chapter 4, explains all of this at length, and you should consult it. It also cites the text of the Pri Etz Chaim* upon which those who hold a divergent view base themselves. It also mentions the Tiferes Shmuel*, which you mention in your letter. See also the Meassef LeChol HaMachanos*, beginning of chapter 34, paragraphs 3 and 9. Nevertheless, no proof can be drawn from there regarding what was said above, that is, concerning the necessity of placing the parchments to the right of the one wearing the Tefillin. Indeed, one can perfectly well crown the letters and make Tefillin of Rashi* having two finger-widths in length and two finger-widths in width. In this way, one will have indeed fulfilled the mitzvah* of Tefillin according to the Shimusha Rabba.

One must conclude that there is also another difference between Rashi and the Shimusha Rabba. Indeed, according to the esoteric teaching of the Torah*, it is precisely the Tefillin of Rashi that one must wear, but this point will not be developed here.

Concerning the number of wrappings of the Tzitzis*, our custom consists, as you know, of making three, three and one, then two, three and three, and so on — the two wrappings completing, of course, the single wrapping that precedes them (5). You mention, on this topic, the Shaar HaKavanos*, but I do not understand what you derive from it, for what it says does not pertain to our discussion.

I do not know if anyone is expert in this domain in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, the Taamei HaMinhagim*, in its current version, does not mention the Chabad books dealing with the subjects it discusses. Indeed, these works were not available in the city where the author resided. It would therefore be good, insofar as possible, to fill this gap now. Indeed, we have been assured that the wellsprings (6) must spread outward.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

M. Schneerson

You ask me about the commentary of the Baal Shem Tov* that appears in the Keser Shem Tov*, volume 2, page 34d (7). Indeed, it mentions fine flour, whereas according to Rashi's commentary on Tractate* Bava Metzia* 87a, it refers to ordinary flour. The anthology Baal Shem Tov notes that this question is raised by the Meir Nesivim*, volume 2, and in the chapter Koach Shor of the Tevuas Shor*.

(4) Which are the dimensions of the Tefillin boxes.
(5) So that these wrappings are always grouped in threes.
