To the young Shalom,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 21 Menachem Av, in which you tell me of your plan to come continue your studies at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* here. In fact, you should continue your studies at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of France (in Brunoy, near Paris) and endeavor to exert a positive influence on others, in particular on the students who came from Morocco and who attend this institution (see Letter #3433). For they deserve special attention.

Fortunate is the lot of whoever devotes himself to all this, as a Rav and even more so as a friend. Indeed, our Sages say: "I have learned much from my masters, and from my friends more than from my masters." Hashem acts "measure for measure" (in the manner one acts toward Him), but in a greatly increased manner, as our Sages explain, cited in the introduction of the Tanya*, regarding the verse: "Hashem illumines the eyes of both."

You inform me of your birthday, and on this occasion you will surely adopt the Chassidic customs: going up to the Torah* on the Shabbos* preceding this date (if it is not a day of Torah reading), giving Tzedakah* before the morning prayer (Shacharis*) and the afternoon prayer (Minchah*) — or, if it is a Shabbos* or festival, on the eve of this date — studying an additional passage of the revealed dimension of Torah* and of Chassidus*, in addition to the three studies that concern every individual — those of the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* — which are well known.

May Hashem grant that you have a year of success in the study of Torah* and in the practice of Mitzvos*, in the finest manner.

With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה על מכתבו מכ"א מנ"א, בו כותב ע"ד מחשבה לנסוע ללמוד לתומכי תמימים דכאן, וצריך הי' להתמיד בתומכי תמימים דצרפת, ולהשתדל בהשפעה על הזולת, ובפרט וביחוד על האברכים שבאו ממרוקה ללמוד בתו"ת דצרפת, הצריכים התעסקות מיוחדת, ואשרי חלקו של כל אחד ואחד שיעשה בזה, הן בתורת רב ועוד יותר בתורת חבר וכמרז"ל הרבה למדתי מרבותי ומחברי יותר מ[רבותי], ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה אלא שכמה פעמים ככה, וכמבואר במרז"ל המובא בהקדמת התניא על הפסוק מאיר עיני שניהם ה'.

ולהודעתו מיום הולדת שלו, הנה בטח ינהג במנהג אנ"ש ביום ההולדת בעלי' לתורה (או ביום הש"ק שקדם לו, באם אין יום הקריאה ביום ההולדת), בנתינת צדקה קודם התפלה שחרית ומנחה (ואם חל בש"ק או ביום טוב, אזי ביום שלפניו), ולימוד שיעור נוסף בתורת הנגלה ובתורת החסידות, לבד שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.

הנה יה"ר שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בלימוד התורה ובקיום המצות בהידור.
