Greetings and blessings,
I received your letter of 22 Menachem Av, which followed a long silence. Divine Providence has given you the means to spread the wellsprings* (of Chassidus*) within a certain Yeshivah*, among certain students. One can see that such an opportunity is a gift from Hashem, for the Yeshivah* students as well as for yourself. You can deduce from this how necessary the effort in this matter is.
Granted, sometimes a gift from Hashem can remain without effect, Heaven forbid. Conversely, when one makes use of it, one obviously obtains a result far superior to what one could have achieved through one's own strength alone. In your case, your joy is not what it should be, for it seems that your effort is particularly weak. Yet even a slight effort on your part, whatever it might have been — even on the basis of a mere doubt or a doubt of a doubt — would clearly have assured your sustenance, both spiritual and material. How much more so would this have been the case had this effort been in accordance with what has been described.
I have already written to several Chassidim* that we have the merit of living in an era when everything is being transformed, clarified, and illuminated. Admittedly, the trials are difficult. But in various domains — particularly regarding the Chassidim* in our Holy Land (where the addressee presumably resides) — I am certain that material sustenance can be assured if one devotes oneself, in the appropriate manner, to spiritual sustenance. Unfortunately, I have not yet succeeded in convincing them.
I have already written to some Chassidim* in our Holy Land to tell them that their situation is comparable to that described in chapter 40 of the Tanya* — that of a man standing beside a river who demands water to drink. Indeed, he refuses to lower his head toward this river, toward this source of living waters, whereas if he did so, he could drink and have bread — that is, assure his material sustenance in the most literal sense.
With my blessing of success in all that has been said and that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
