Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3732 — Faith & Bitachon

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Issar,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received the two books of which you are the author — Yechidei Segulah and Rabbi Meir Yechiel of Ostrovtsa. I thank you. No doubt you will maintain this good custom in the future and send your books to my library, especially since they are made available to the public there.
As a mark of friendship, I leafed through these books in the time available to me. It seems to me that it would be of great benefit to these articles to append a list of references (see Letter #3657) after each text or at the end of the book. The reader will be able to consult them and find more details about what is presented, rather briefly, in these texts.
It would also be good to compile a list of books and writings dealing with the same subject as each article. Sometimes, at least for discerning readers, this too is a means of arriving at a more precise understanding.
I observe, on the book jacket, that you intend to publish a second volume. The present remarks are therefore not a complaint about the past (which would be useless). Indeed, it will be possible for you to include in the second volume the references for the first. Thus, the words of the masters of our perfect Torah* will not be inferior to those whose content is vain but which are, nonetheless, adorned with references, a bibliography, and a list of dates.
Moreover, in this orphaned generation, when certain categories of people can be attracted by a ray of light (and brought back to Jewish practice), what is presented to them must be externally appealing in order to arouse interest. In this way, what has only a completely accessory value will lead toward what is most fundamental. You know what the Rambam* says regarding the education of children (that they should be enticed to study Torah* with the promise of sweets). And this applies even more clearly to those who are children in terms of their level of knowledge. You should consult the lengthy explanation he gives on this subject in his commentary on the Mishnah*, Tractate Sanhedrin*, beginning of chapter 10. See also the Mishneh Torah*, at the end of the Laws of Teshuvah*.
Another small remark can be made, which is nonetheless very important in our generation, when many pass off darkness as light and light as darkness. In your book, you present people belonging to very different and even opposing categories. Now, to use the image of the Zohar* (Vol. 1, page 27b; see also the commentaries on the Zohar*), it is said that Moshe was "buried in the Torah," and one knows that one buries side by side only friends. Yet in your book, you have not always proceeded in this manner (divergent views are presented one after another).
You could have divided these articles into several sections, if you wished, for whatever reason, to discuss all these subjects at once. In any case, the subject of one article should not be in opposition to that of the article that follows it. As I said, all this is particularly important, for one must not mislead the uninformed reader, who will think that all those presented together in the book possess the same greatness in Torah* and in the fear of Hashem. This allusion will suffice for a wise person to understand what I mean.
I observed in the list for the second volume the name of the Rebbe Rashab*. A brief biography concerning him, which was published a few years ago and is based on the notes of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, has been sent to you by separate mailing.
With my respects and my blessing that you succeed in strengthening the spirit of true Yiddishkeit* and the Tradition of Israel, imbued with Chassidic light and warmth, among those who receive your influence,
M. Schneerson
N.B.: Due to the respect that must be shown to holy writings, it does not seem at all appropriate to print verses calligraphed in the script of the Sefer Torah* in books of Halachah* or Aggadah*, and all the more so in biographical books. I am therefore very surprised to observe that you have done so at the end of your work.
A page of the Megillas Esther* has also been published in this manner, but that is not at all comparable, for it does not contain the Name of Hashem. In addition, it served as a means of showing everyone how a Megillah* is written, which is not the case here.
