22 Menachem Av 5715

Brooklyn

Blessings and greetings (this letter is addressed to a young woman),

I am responding to your letter of the twelfth day of Menachem Av, in which you discuss the end of your studies, your state of mind, and the lack of independence you observe in yourself. It seems to you that you are lost. You therefore think of relocating for one year. Thus, finding yourself in a new environment, without the possibility of receiving instructions from your parents at every step, you will be able to acquire independence and free yourself from this confusion and these doubts. You ask me what I think.

According to what your letter indicates, you do not wish to go to that place to seek comfort or pleasure. On the contrary, your purpose is to chart a path through your own strength, to gather your wits under the pressure of the situation. In this way, you will pull yourself together and be capable of expressing your deep powers.

If this is indeed your true motivation, it means that this trip is unnecessary. It is not certain that in that place you will be able to fully utilize the capabilities you possess, or even a part of them. Indeed, you visited that place during the seven days of the festival (presumably Sukkos*) and were received in a certain manner, but this gives you no indication of how you will be regarded when you seek work and a position there, when you wish to take action on the spot.

In fact, there is no better place to test one's capabilities than Eretz Yisrael* (where the addressee resides). Life there is very diverse, and every vital force can be utilized to its full measure, particularly in the area of education and teaching, especially when it is necessary to take Torah* and Mitzvos* as one's reference rather than following the current advocating laxity.

In such a case, a journey to such a place in order to seek work and challenges, in order to bring to light what one hides deep within oneself, is most often a flight — a means of avoiding responsible work for at least several months. Admittedly, not everyone is able to recognize this, and quite often one has the impression that the desire to travel is motivated by, for example, the discovery of a new path.

In various families, the authority and love of parents, when one is within their proximity, reduce the possibilities of revealing one's own powers. If this risk is well-founded (in the particular case of this young woman), you can arrange that at the beginning of the school year and the teaching period, you do not reside with them. Such an arrangement will be similar to the one you envision, and you will be able to make your own decisions, since you will no longer rely on your parents and their instructions.

All that has been said answers your question. In the lines that follow, however, I shall address the essential point, which is not mentioned in your letter, and it is as follows. More than 90% of the young men and women in our Holy Land have difficulty finding their way. They are filled with doubts about how to organize their lives and about their future. They do not know which path to choose. Now, for the most part, they face such doubts due to a lack of knowledge and on account of their ignorance.

Consequently, every man and woman to whom Hashem has granted the ability to influence others — in particular those who are on the spot and know the responsibilities of young people's lives, their moral "labor pains" — must devote a large part of their ardor and capabilities to helping them in this situation.

Every day, every week that passes while these young people are left unattended can endanger their future, leading them to take, on their own initiative, harmful decisions out of a lack of knowledge and because they are not being guided. One who, through Divine Providence, is not confronted with these fundamental doubts — because he or she received a good education or grew up in a favorable environment — must act in the manner described, in order to repay a debt incurred by virtue of what was personally granted to him or her.

For the greatest effort one can invest in this matter will only partially repay this debt. Obviously, no one is authorized to exempt himself from this sacred mission, and I would like to know what you yourself are doing in this area.

In my view, this mission incumbent upon all young men and women — and all the more so upon those in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. There, thousands, tens of thousands of Jewish souls can be saved from danger.

Your letter seems to indicate that you may not have considered the problem from this angle. I have good hope that at least upon reading these lines, you will reflect on all this with due attention and draw the necessary conclusions. In my view, these are clear and evident. As quickly as possible, you will therefore assume your role by taking part in this sacred mission with the greatest zeal.

May Hashem grant you success in this and may you find full intellectual satisfaction therein. I await good news from you.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
