Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your request for a blessing, and I am surprised that for you as well it is necessary to emphasize repeatedly how much more important it is to accompany such a request with a spiritual Tzedakah* (a good resolution) rather than a material Tzedakah* (a monetary gift).

Granted, Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe* explains that material Tzedakah* has the most concrete effect. Nevertheless, by spiritual Tzedakah* I mean everything that concerns Torah* and Mitzvos* in general, and the positive influence one exerts on one's fellow in these domains in particular. Now, you say nothing of all this in your letters. And may Hashem grant that the fact that you do not write on this subject is not a sign of a lack in this matter.

I ask all this of you not solely for the purpose of making your good deeds known in another place, although this too is a Mitzvah*, since you thereby bring joy to your fellow. Above all, however, asking you to write to another Jew describing what you have accomplished is meant to give you the strength and courage to do even more. One can verify concretely that this is indeed the case, and no further proof is therefore necessary.

מאשרים קבלת הפ"נ שלו, ולפלא שגם אותו צריך לעורר כמה פעמים, אשר בצירוף לפ"נ נוגע בהרבה יותר להודיע אודות צדקה ברוחניות מאשר צדקה בגשמיות, אף שמובן ע"פ אגרת הקדש לרבנו הזקן שצדקה גשמית ממשיכה למטה מטה ממש. וצדקה רוחנית כוונתי - ענינים דתורה ומצות בכלל והשפעה על הזולת בפרט בענינים אלו.

ובמכתביו אינו מזכיר דבר עד"ז. והלואי שלא יחסר ע"י חסרון בכתיבה גם בהפעולות.

ומובן ג"כ שאין כוונתי - בכדי שידעו ע"ד פעולותיו גם בעוד מקום, אף שגם זה ענין של מצוה כיון שגורמים שמחה לחבריו מישראל, אלא הוא העיקר - שהידיעה שבעוד זמן יצטרך לכתוב ע"ד פעולותיו לעוד אחד מישראל מוסיף זה כח ואומץ לעשות יותר.

והנראה במוחש אין צריך ראיות נוספות...
