To the young Yitzchak Yehudah,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 12 Menachem Av, in which you tell me that you are continuing your studies at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* in Lod. On the eve of the upcoming Yom Kippur*, you will celebrate your Bar Mitzvah* and begin to put on Tefillin*.
May Hashem grant that this be at a good and fruitful time. You should ask your teacher and the dean of the Yeshivah* to teach you, with all due care, the beginning of chapter 41 of the holy Tanya* and what is said there concerning the Tefillin* (i.e., what to meditate upon when wearing them).
Indeed, according to the Shulchan Aruch*, one anticipates the putting on of Tefillin* in order to prepare for the time when one will be obligated to do so. The same therefore applies to the moral preparation (which must be begun in advance), and Hashem will grant you success.
It would be good that, without making a vow, you set aside a few coins for Tzedakah* each day, from now until your Bar Mitzvah*. After the prayer, you should recite Psalm 13 (which is read during the thirteenth year, until the thirteenth birthday), in addition to those belonging to the monthly division. Hashem will grant you success in this as well.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב מנ"א, בו אתה כותב שהנך לומד בישיבת תומכי תמימים בלוד ובערב יום הכפורים הבע"ל יהי' הבר מצוה שלך והתחלת להניח תפילין.
ויהי רצון שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ותבקש את הר"מ והר"י שלך שילמדו אתך בהדגשה הדרושה ריש פרק מ"א בתניא קדישא בהאמור שם בהנוגע לתפילין, כי כמו שהמתחילים בהנחת תפילין בגשמיות בתור הכנה לזמן חיובם ע"פ שולחן ערוך, הנה הוא הדין בהנוגע להכנה ברוחניות, והשי"ת יצליחך.
וכדאי אשר בלי נדר הנה מהיום ועד הבר מצוה תפריש בכל יום חול לפני התפלה איזה פרוטות לצדקה, ותאמר קאפיטל תהלים י"ג לאחר התפלה, נוסף על השיעור תהלים כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש, והשי"ת יצליחך גם בזה.
