Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter, which was undated. I am surprised that in this letter you say nothing about the time you set aside to study Chassidus*, the "Tree of Life," according to the expression of the Raya Mehemna*, and the manner in which you adopt its customs and practices. Similarly, certain other details are lacking. No doubt you are doing, in this matter, everything in your power.
It is clear that reporting in another place has, in itself, no value, though this too is a Mitzvah*, since gladdening a fellow Jew is an application of the commandment to love one's fellow, which is a great principle of the Torah*. Moreover, letting someone know that one maintains good conduct is a means of strengthening it and preserving it. On the other hand, if no one knows, the Yetzer Hara* finds many explanations for weakening one's application. Subsequently, it seeks to eliminate it entirely, as experience proves.
You tell me that certain people maintain the conduct they had previously and consider that any change constitutes a deviation from the truth.
I am surprised that one can even imagine such a way of acting. Indeed, it is stated that what the Sages teach in each era was already given to Moshe on Mount Sinai (there is thus indeed new teaching revealed in each era). Nevertheless, this teaching must conform to the principles of our holy Torah*, which is eternal and will not be changed.
Conversely, one who claims to accept the teachings of the Sages of the early generations, or of the most ancient among the later generations, but not those of the most recent leaders of Israel, commits an error, as the revealed dimension of Torah* establishes in Choshen Mishpat*, at the beginning of chapter 25 (see also the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Laws of Torah Study, beginning of chapter 2). His error is comparable to one that would be made regarding the Mishnah* in the era of the Sages of the Gemara*. You should also consult what results from this for the Halachah*.
If such an outlook had spread, Heaven forbid, Mussar* study would not have been introduced into the Yeshivos*. Indeed, eighty years ago, most heads of Yeshivos* opposed such study in a particularly fierce manner — far more clearly than the opposition currently expressed regarding the teaching of Chassidus*. You should study, with all due attention, the introduction of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim*.
The Torah* accords a decisive role to action, and this introduction emphasizes that life provides a concrete example. Moreover, in our days, it has been observed — to our great sorrow — that of all the young men from the various Yeshivos* who lived under Soviet oppression, the only ones capable of withstanding the trial during the decades they remained there were those who studied Chassidus* — not those who contented themselves with the revealed dimension of Torah*, nor even those who devoted themselves to Mussar*.
Tens, hundreds of eyewitnesses can testify that this was indeed the case, and a large part of them are currently in the Holy Land (where the addressee presumably also resides). What is well known needs no proof.
Enough, then, of discussing and questioning the necessity of studying Chassidus*! Every moment that is lost will never be recovered! Now, the Alter Rebbe* says in his holy Tanya*, at the end of chapter 25, that one could have achieved an eternal unification that is immutable on high. Yet one wastes time responding to the arguments of those who wish to prevent the study of a part of the Torah* — when this study encompasses not only its plain meaning, its allusive meaning, and its analytical meaning (see also Zohar*, Vol. 3, beginning of Parashas* Ki Seitzei, and the end of the Tikkunei Zohar*), but also its inner dimension, its hidden part, which connects the hidden part of the soul to that of the Holy One, blessed be He, as the Zohar* states, Vol. 3, page 73a.
How deep are the darkness, the veil, and the mask! For one knows well why, in the era of the Baal Shem Tov*, there was opposition to his teaching. All of this is in print (see Tractate Avodah Zarah* 35a). The books are available even now. The arguments that were invoked are known. There was fear that it would lead to less strict conduct in the observance of Mitzvos*, or even beyond that. And I do not wish to analyze these arguments more deeply — arguments that, already at that time, were unfounded.
Since then, two hundred years have elapsed. One sees and hears, at every step, that those who followed his disciples and the students of his disciples observe the Mitzvos* in the finest manner, respect even the slightest enactments of our Sages, and even endeavor to draw other Jews closer to a service of Hashem filled with joy — which is not the case for those who have not adopted Chassidus*.
I send you my blessing that upon receiving this letter, you increase your study of all that has been discussed. You should pay no attention to the doubts that someone from the outside wishes to raise within your four cubits. Our books explain that Safek* (doubt) has the same numerical value as Amalek*. Now, Amalek fights against all the children of Israel whom he encounters on his path, even when they have already left Egypt. And it is said that "the war is waged against Amalek in every generation," including that of Moshiach*, as the Targum Yonasan* specifies.
