To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Mordechai HaKohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I have just received your letter from Motzoei Shabbos*. You discuss the plants and the seeds (of the Esrogim* from Calabria; see Letter #3547) and you argue in favor of the former, saying that in principle it is permitted to plant those that come from trees that have undergone grafting. The commentators on the Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh Deah*, at the end of chapter 295, treat this subject at length and they ask whether it is forbidden to maintain or to replant a tree that has undergone grafting. Nevertheless, this does not indicate to which species it belongs (i.e., whether the fruit growing on this tree can be considered an Esrog*).

Indeed, there is reason to fear that the product of the grafting may no longer be an Esrog*, or else that it may be an imperfect Esrog*. In that case, what difference does it make that its planting is not forbidden? Moreover, even according to your conception, it is impossible to think that the plants from a tree are good while the seeds are not. That would be very surprising. The principle, as Tractate Chullin* 115a indicates, is that on the contrary, the status of the fruit is broader than that of the shoot. This point will not be developed here.

And in fact, what responsibility does one incur by also taking the seeds? It is clear that this does not entail any additional effort, especially since I was alluding to trees that have not undergone grafting, according to trustworthy testimony (literally: "pronounced with integrity") as well as according to their external appearance. Until the previous generation, Calabria had the reputation of providing Esrogim* that had not undergone grafting. One must therefore maintain this presumption for it, which should supplement the observation to which I alluded.

I received the article on Pesach* in its Italian translation (see Letter #3547), and one may formulate the following remarks about it. It seems that the periodical in which it appeared addresses communal leaders — that is, a restricted circle. This is what one may think by considering the articles that precede and follow it. There is reason to believe that this will not interest the youth.

If there is no other periodical read by our brethren, the children of Israel, in Italy, there is no alternative and the situation is then different. On the other hand, if another exists, it would be good to publish material dealing with Chassidus* there. If there is a publication in a city other than yours, you can surely establish contact through acquaintances.

The style of the translation seems to me heavy and even, if one may say, too difficult for the reader to want to read the article to the end, or all the more so to reread it. It is clear that it is not at all written in the manner of writings intended for young people.

The content of the article and its words of encouragement are in keeping with the present period. But insofar as it is so difficult to publish such articles, one must seize every opportunity to publish what others will not — namely, teachings of Chassidus* and Chassidic writings. In this case, the present article resembles the most general Mussar* and commentary books, but not those that emanate from Chassidus*.

Now, you surely possess the Likkutei Dibburim*, the talks on Pesach* and especially now those concerning Tishrei* and Simchas Torah*. One finds there easy texts, with accounts of Tzaddikim*, from which a lesson can be drawn.

It seems to me that I have already drawn your attention (see Letters #1962 and #2174) to the fact that one does not speak of "two hundred forty-eight limbs" in reference to a woman's body (as the 248 corresponds to a man's body), as Tractate Bechoros* 45a indicates. Nor does one speak of her two hundred fifty-two limbs, for there is a controversy on this subject, as specified at the same reference, which you should consult. One therefore says simply "all her limbs." Obviously, if someone does not pay attention to all this, there is no need to introduce such a restriction, provided that peace reigns.

With my blessing,
