Igrot Kodesh · Letter 372 — Gratitude, Merit, and Realizing Potential

By the grace of Hashem*,

9 Tammuz* 5708,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid*, scholar who fears Hashem*,

Rav A. E. Axelrod[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter together with your aunt's check. As you suggested, I sent her a letter of thanks and blessing.

The Tzemach Tzedek* comments on our Sages' statement that 'the wine belongs to the master, but one expresses gratitude to the one who poured it'[2] — all the more so since you were 'on both banks of the river'[3]. It is therefore certain that the merit of all depends on your intervention. You may thus be confident that you are capable of accomplishing far more. All that remains is for you to actualize this potential.

I heard that the matter of our friend Rav M. Cohen had a positive outcome[4]. Here too the merit belongs to you, and one mitzvah* draws another.

Enclosed is the booklet published on the occasion of the liberation festival*[5]. No doubt you will make it available to as many people as possible.

מכתבו בצירוף המחאת דודתו נתקבל לנכון וכפי הצעתו כבר כתבו לה מכ' תודה וברכה וכו'.

וחמרא למרא טיבותא לשקייא (וכמשנ"ת בס' טעהמ"צ להצ"צ מצות מילה פ"ג) ובפרט שהי' כבתר[י] עברי נהרא שברור שזכות הרבים תלוי בכת"ר. וזה בטח יוסיף אומץ בלבו שיכול לפעול כהנה וכהנה ואין זה אצלו אלא שהכח חסר פועל.

שמעתי שגם ענין ידידנו הרה"ח וכו' הר"מ שי' הכהן נגמר בטוב וגם בזה זכות המצוה בזה לו היא ומצוה גוררת מצוה.
