19 Menachem Av 5715

Brooklyn

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yerachmiel,

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter of 12 Menachem Av, which followed a long silence, the reason for which it does not explain.

I took note with satisfaction of the classes you give, to groups and to individuals, on the inner dimension of Torah*, which is the Tree of Life. May Hashem grant that the promise of our Sages be fulfilled in you: "(I have learned)... from my students, more than from all others (my teachers and my friends)" — all the more so since we are dealing here with the inner dimension of Torah*, which depends far more than its revealed dimension on the help of Hashem and on the manner in which one devotes oneself to others. And one spreads the wellsprings* (of Chassidus*) outward, so that this help may be increased.

You ask me what the program of study should be. It is clear that it cannot be the same for all classes and for all people. Everything depends on the aptitudes of the listeners. In general, if they are Yeshivah* students, one should consider the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim* (of the Rebbe Rashab*), and for those accustomed to Mussar*, the Kuntres Uma'ayan* (also of the Rebbe Rashab*). To those who have a more philosophical approach, you may teach the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah* in the Tanya*, or the Mitzvah* of faith in Hashem in the Derech Mitzvosecha* (of the Tzemach Tzedek*).

Obviously, at each season of the year, one must teach the Chassidic discourses that are relevant, and at the present time, for example, those pertaining to Elul* and Rosh Hashanah*. In any event, one of the essential goals of this teaching — as is the case whenever the time at one's disposal is limited — is to arouse in the listener a desire and will to continue the study independently, or at the very least to review and deepen what has been taught.

It is surely unnecessary to emphasize the necessity of conversing with your listeners about everything that surrounds Chassidus*. Several points on this subject are clearly explained in the Sefer HaSichos* or the Likkutei Dibburim*. You will be able to conclude from these how you should present to them the service of Hashem, meditation before prayer based on what you teach them, the ritual immersion according to Ezra (after every marital relation), the recitation of Tehillim*, and Chassidic conduct.
