To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

Despite what you write me in your letter, it would be good for you to go to Elisabethville. Indeed, you do not go to Africa every month, nor even every year. Now, to save a single soul, the Rebbe Maharash*, whose merit protects us, traveled from Marienbad to Paris, according to the well-known account (see Sefer HaSichos* 5705, page 30), while every instant and every hour of his time were particularly precious. How much more so must this be the case for us, especially when it involves several people, and all the more so since material good can also result from it (the possibility of raising funds for the Yeshivah* on the spot).

Granted, we do not possess the powers and the certainty that the Rebbe Maharash* had on his journey. One must therefore pray to Hashem to grant us His help, regardless of our degree of preparation here below, and reduce our ego. In this way, one will draw closer and closer to the status of an emissary of the Heavenly One, who identifies with Him, if one may express it thus, as the Likkutei Torah* explains at the beginning of Parashas* Vayikra, and as the works of the Sages of recent generations define this mission, which comprises various aspects (see Letter #960).

Indeed, does the emissary, through his action, place himself in the service of the One Who mandates him? Or does his action become, strictly speaking, the accomplishment of the One Who mandates him? Or must one consider that the emissary himself fully identifies with the One Who mandates him? This can be compared to what is said regarding the "ordinary servant" in the sequence of Chassidic discourses of 5666 (1906, of the Rebbe Rashab*). This point will not be developed here.

... כדאי הי' בכל זה - למרות מה שכותב במכתבו לבקר בעיר עליזאבעטויל כיון שלא כל חדש ואפי' שנה נוסעים לאפריקה, ואם בשביל נפש אחת כדאי הי' לכ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לנסוע ביחוד ממארינבאד לפאריז וכידוע הסיפור בזה אף שהי' מייקר כל רגע ושעה מזמנו, עאכו"כ בהנוגע לכאו"א מאתנו, ובשביל כמה נפשות ובפרט שגם קבוץ הגשמיות ישנו בדבר, ואף שפשוט שאין לנו הכחות והודאיות שהי' לכ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש בנסיעתו הוא, הנה יש להתפלל על הסייעתא דשמיא מבלי להביט על ההכשרות מלמטה ולמעט במציאות עצמו, שאז מתקרבים ביותר וביותר להיות לשלוחו של אדם העליון כמותו כביכול כמבואר כ"ז בלקו"ת ריש פרשת ויקרא וכמבואר בספרי האחרונים בענין שליחות שיש בזה כמה ענינים אם שרק שהמעשה מוציא את המשלח או שהמעשה נעשית מעשה המשלח או שהשליח עצמו נעשה המשלח כו' (שהוא ע"ד המבואר במעלת עבד פשוט, בהמשך תרס"ו ובכ"מ)...
