14 Menachem Av 5715
Brooklyn
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 7 Menachem Av and to what it contained. You were yourself responding to the proposal I had formulated. Indeed, few are those who know exactly what happened, particularly regarding the Chassidim*, Chassidus*, and its masters. Only a few people took notes when the events occurred. Moreover, there is also a family tradition (of the Rebbe's* family), a large part of which is not known even to the Chassidim*, except for the closest ones.
All members of the family who remember sayings or events from that era have, in my view, the sacred obligation and merit of writing them down, in the most precise manner, without concealment and without embellishment.
As for the denunciation of Strodov (see, on this subject, the letters of the Rebbe Maharash*, Letter #19, and in greater detail the book entitled "The Power of the Case Pleaded" by Fishel Schneersohn), I possess no material on this subject. But some may be found in the portion of the manuscripts of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, that has not yet been catalogued.
Nevertheless, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, told me once that as a young man, he knew Rav Neumark (Rav Chaim Meshulam Zalman Neumark, who was successively Rav of Strodov, Vitebsk, and Nevel). The latter had been imprisoned (as a result of this denunciation), for he had declared himself guilty (in order to save the Rebbe Maharash*, upon whom the accusation fell), and regarding this, he had given the following logical explanation: "One of his hours..."
My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, explained to me what he meant. It was so important to him that not a single hour of the Rebbe Maharash* be lost, that he made the choice to declare himself guilty.
With my respects and my blessing,
