To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Nissan,

Greetings and blessings,

You inform me of your birthday. May Hashem grant that you have a year of success, materially and spiritually. This success will manifest itself in the Mitzvah* and, more specifically, in that which is for you the gate of access (see Letter #2990), from above to below and from below to above, as is explained in Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 7 (see also Sefer HaSichos*, Summer 5700, page 22).

Divine Providence, as revealed by the teaching of our holy masters whose merit protects us, has shown that, for you, this gate of access is the directorship of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* (in Brunoy, near Paris) and the education of the students who attend it, so that they become Chassidim* who fear Hashem and are learned.

It is in this manner that you will experience success in other areas as well, which obviously includes your personal concerns too.

I send you my blessing that the words of Psalm 52 (since the Rav was presumably celebrating his fifty-first birthday) be fulfilled in you: "I am like a fresh olive in the house of Hashem... having goodness for those who are virtuous before You." Our Sages explain, indeed, that the olive cannot be grafted (see Yerushalmi*, Kilayim, chapter 1, paragraph 7; see also Likkutei Torah*, Bamidbar, page 27d, and the addenda of Sefer HaChakirah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, page 12a). Furthermore, the "house of Hashem" is the place where Chassidus* is taught, where one educates in its knowledge, its customs, and its practices.
