To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and carries out a sacred mission,
Rav Zeev Tzvi,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of 3 Menachem Av. May Hashem grant you the merit and success to intensify your study, including that of Chassidus*, in good health and with breadth of mind. Chassidus* is "the Tree of Life, in which there is no controversy." In this way, everything that constitutes an obstacle to the submission necessary for Torah* and Mitzvos* will disappear.
You ask me about the Tzedakah* that one should give before prayer, and you ask me when it should be done. The Shulchan Aruch*, at the end of chapter 92, cited in the introduction of the Alter Rebbe* to the Siddur*, notes what Tractate Bava Basra* 10a states: "He gives a coin to a pauper and then begins to pray." This text infers from the word "then" that one must do so before the beginning of the prayer — that is, presumably before the Shemoneh Esrei* (the prayer of the eighteen blessings).
One can draw the same inference by observing that this principle is taught in the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim*, between the laws of Shema Yisrael* and those of the Shemoneh Esrei*. On the other hand, the Siddur* of the Arizal* and the Pri Eitz Chaim*, Gate 7, chapter 5, state that one gives this Tzedakah* during the prayer of Vayevarech David* ("And David blessed," before the reading of the Song of the Sea), while pronouncing the words "Ve'Atah Moshel BaKol*" ("And You rule over all"). Some have the custom of giving three coins, corresponding to these three words. The same statement also appears in the Pri Megadim*.
According to the revealed dimension of Torah*, one can explain that the Tzedakah* is given before Yishtabach* (the blessing that precedes the reading of the Shema Yisrael* and its blessings), for it is then that the Shliach Tzibbur* (prayer leader) takes his place before the lectern and, from that point on, he must not interrupt, as the Tur Shulchan Aruch* states at the beginning of chapter 53.
But at the present time, one takes one's place before the lectern even before that, and it would then be surprising to interrupt. Doing so might even be interpreted as ostentatious conduct (meant to show all present that one is giving Tzedakah*). This helps explain why most people have the custom of giving Tzedakah* before the beginning of prayer.
Obviously, if one gives Tzedakah* after the Shemoneh Esrei*, this is a practice entirely independent of what one should do before the prayer, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages. Nevertheless, several of the later halachic authorities cite both customs together.
You also ask me about the change in the ruling of the Alter Rebbe* in his Shulchan Aruch* regarding the necessity of standing when one recites the description of the sacrifices. The halachic rulings of the Siddur*, by Rav Naeh*, note this as well. This poses no difficulty, for the final edition of the Shulchan Aruch* presents several modifications compared to the first. And the Shaar HaKollel* states, at its beginning, that the final edition is closer to the view of the Kabbalah*. This is indeed the case here. You should consult the various opinions on this subject in the commentaries on Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim*, chapter 48.
With my blessing,
