Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the Sunday of Parashas* Va'eschanan. I am surprised that during all the time you spent there, you did not find a man capable of serving as an intermediary and proposing a good match for you. Furthermore, your letter seems to indicate that you attach importance to what is accessory and even to what is altogether trivial. Now, as you know, our Sages say that "one descends from one's level to marry a wife." Moreover, it is said that "the daughters of Israel are beautiful, but poverty diminishes their appearance" (beauty being apparently one of the points to which the addressee attaches much importance).

May Hashem therefore guide you on the right path, so that you observe what is essential and primary. In this way, you will not exaggerate the importance of what is superficial, and you will find the match suited to you, materially and spiritually at the same time.

You ask me about an action performed in error — for example, to sanctify an object (to consecrate it to the Beis HaMikdash*) or to prepare it (for a certain use, for example on Shabbos*). Does this error merely annul the action in question, or does it furthermore run counter to that action? You lean toward the latter possibility, which is particularly astonishing. Such an explanation must be ruled out. How could the verbal affirmation of a preparation render forbidden an object that is, in itself, permitted?

You cite, as proof, the Baal HaMaor*, who discusses, at the beginning of Tractate Beitzah*, the subject of lean doves. He cites them as an example of what has been prepared in error. Now, it is clear that one cannot consume them due to their leanness, not because they are forbidden on account of the error committed in preparing them.

With my blessing,
