Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the Sunday of Parashas* Va'eschanan. I thank you for conveying good news, since you tell me that you were able to carry out an action linked to the concrete observance of Mitzvos*. No doubt this will awaken within you increased ardor. Indeed, if the effort invested until now has been effective, how much more so must an effort corresponding to what it truly should be prove to be so. There is no need to elaborate, so evident is this.
You tell me that you are not satisfied with your work and that it is difficult. Contrary to all expectation, some people are convinced that they need not smile or be satisfied with the manner in which Hashem directs the world in general and what concerns them in particular.
Indeed, such a reaction could mean that these people are satisfied with what they possess (and want no more — which is not the case). Now, however good this may be, one can always imagine something better. Consequently, they must perpetually raise objections in the face of difficulties and bitterness, at every step and in everything.
It is clear that this runs contrary to the teaching of our holy Torah* and all the more so to the explanation our Sages give of the verse: "Every soul shall praise You." They say, indeed, that one must praise Hashem for every breath (the word Neshamah — breath — has the same root as Neshamah — soul). How much more so is this the case when one succeeds in sowing spirituality and in collecting materiality (i.e., raising funds for the Lubavitch institutions).
The holy Zohar* states that by having a downcast face, one causes the same to be the case, as it were, for Hashem, and one therefore obtains a corresponding revelation. This is not the case when one is joyful and satisfied with one's situation, whatever it may be. This allows one to improve one's state and then to progress toward what is even better. You should consult, on this subject, the Zohar*, Vol. 2, page 184b.
I do not wish to be more lengthy, for I do not know whether this will change your attitude, even though I have good hope that this way of acting has not yet become, for you, a second nature. And these few lines, in fact, suffice to present the situation as it is.
May Hashem grant that you become aware of your good fortune, that you understand that He has placed you in a ray of light. You should thank Him and praise Him, because you have been given, with success, the ability to collect material goods, to plow and to sow spirituality, through the effort that has been accomplished until now and, all the more so, by acting in accordance with what has just been described.
With my blessing,
