You ask me where to place the Aron Kodesh* (i.e., whether it should protrude from the wall). One must verify whether this would not constitute a change of practice (already existing in this synagogue). If such a protrusion did not exist in the wall until now, there is no reason to introduce one.
It is well known how especially careful one must be not to change anything in a synagogue, even if it is a small detail, even if it seems to pose no problem at that particular moment. Indeed, the one who observes this change will ask himself how this modification differs from another (one that contravenes the Halachah*, a point that escapes him). You must understand what I mean.

... ומ"ש אודות מקום העמדת הארון, יש לברר אם יש בזה משום שינוי מנהג, ובאם לא נעשה באופן דבליטות כאלו מבחוץ עד עתה, הרי אין לחדש ענין זה, וכידוע עד כמה נזהרו בדקדוק ביותר וביותר מבלי לעשות שום התחדשות בעניני בית הכנסת אפילו בדברים קלים, ואפילו אם לכאורה אין בזה חשש על אתר, כי הרי הרואה האומר מה נשתנה שינוי זה משינוי אחר, וד"ל.
