To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
of manifold knowledge, Rav Yosef Baruch,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter of "Monday, 29 Tammuz" — a phrase whose beginning contradicts its end (since 29 Tammuz 5715 was in fact a Tuesday). Indeed, there is no reason to employ the first term or the last, for in practice one can observe that attention is paid to the day of the week. And how much more so must a Rav do so, since it has a bearing on the Torah* reading.
There is nothing that cannot be found, by way of allusion, in the Torah*, and my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, instituted that one study each day the corresponding passage of the Sidrah* of the week. Thus, it is the Sheini* (second portion) that is studied on Monday. In this case, that passage defines the function of a Rav who delivers teaching to Israel, his approach — in particular when he is confronted with financial questions, which, according to the revealed dimension of Torah*, requires a greater effort than pronouncing a prohibition. Chassidus* provides an explanation on this subject, found in a pamphlet enclosed herewith.
In any event, I took note with satisfaction from your letter of your commentaries and the allusions you highlight in the pamphlet describing the imprisonment of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. No doubt you will send me further such explanations in your upcoming letters. Indeed, the strongest light is that which follows darkness, and the greatest joy is that which follows sadness. Such superiority is indeed felt in this matter.
You raise the possibility of offering the Korban Pesach* and consuming it at the same moment. On the one hand, this sacrifice unites these two moments, especially since we are dealing here with the Korban Pesach*, for which consumption is fundamental — which is not the case for other sacrifices, where consumption is but one aspect among others, as the Mishnah* states in Tractate Pesachim* 76b, and Rashi* explains at that reference: "He thereby grants it particular value, for he received the Injunction to consume it."
It has already been explained many times that the Korban Pesach*, specifically, also presents the reverse aspect. Indeed, offering it and consuming it are two Mitzvos* independent of one another. This is not the case for other sacrifices that are consumed. The Sefer HaYere'im* specifies, in chapter 405, that this is because the offering and consumption do not take place at the same hour.
But from this, one can say regarding the Shelamim* that the two days and the intervening night (during which they may be consumed) are likewise joined together to constitute a single period, since one seeks holiness. And an additional point applies to Pesach*, since in any case, the night follows the day (and does not precede it) for all sacrifices. What could not be completed during the day may, if need be, be completed the following night; one cannot, however, begin it from the preceding night. I do not possess the Otzros Yosef that you mention in this regard.
For a certain reason, the Chassidic discourse entitled "Tzion shall be redeemed through judgment," by the Alter Rebbe*, with the commentaries of the Tzemach Tzedek*, has just been published. I enclose it for you. You will surely make its content available to the greatest number. The merit of all depends on you.
With my blessing of success,
M. Schneerson
