Igrot Kodesh · Letter 370 — Showbread and Shabbat Override

Volume 2 · Letter 205

By the grace of Hashem,

25 Sivan* 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav M. M.[1], the shochet*,

I greet you and bless you,

I am replying to your letter. The Rosh*, commenting on tractate Tamid* 32b, explains that according to one opinion, the making of the showbread*[2] overrides the prohibitions of Shabbat*. You ask who holds this view.

This discussion is cited in tractate Menachot* 95b. The Tosafot* distinguish between one who holds that the showbread was made within the Temple precincts and one who holds that it may be made on Shabbat. According to them, these are two different authors.

According to this interpretation, there are three opinions expressed here:

1. The making of the showbread does not override Shabbat. This is the opinion of an anonymous Mishnah*[3] in tractate Menachot 100b.

2. One may bake these loaves on Shabbat. However, one may not prepare the dough and knead it on that day. This opinion is expressed in the same Mishnah.

3. The entire process of making the loaves overrides Shabbat. This is the opinion of Rabbi Yehudah at the same reference.

On this matter, the Rambam* rules that the loaves are made within the Temple precincts and do not override Shabbat. One may conclude from this that there is no disagreement among the Sages of the Mishnah on this point. All agree that this bread is not baked on Shabbat according to this Mishnah, but such is not the view of the Tosafot, as we have seen.

This is also what the commentary of the Radak* states on the verse of Samuel I* 21, which says that the laws of Shabbat are overridden only according to Rabbi Yehudah. In the Yalkut Shimoni*, the Radak specifies that Doeg* and David* disputed on this point[4]. One may question this regarding the version of the Yerushalmi* Sanhedrin 10, 2.

A powerful question may be raised here. Indeed, one who holds that the making of the bread overrides the prohibitions of Shabbat must say that it was systematically prepared on that day. Were this not the case, it would have been disqualified for having passed the night*[5]. According to the other opinion, by contrast, the bread had to be prepared before Shabbat.

How then was there a doubt in the matter, when one had only to see what happened each week since the time of Moshe*[6]? The Kessef Mishneh* raises this very question.

One must conclude that this controversy always existed and that in each era the Sanhedrin* decided what was to be done in the matter. And our Sages say, in tractate Rosh Hashanah* 25[7]: 'One will follow the opinion of the judge of one's generation.'

Doeg presided over the rabbinic court, as Rashi* states commenting on the verse 'champion among the shepherds' (Samuel I 14). Tractate Sanhedrin 93b says that the halachah* always follows David's opinion. Consequently, when both were at Nov*[8], the question arose once again. Did the making of the showbread override Shabbat or not?

The Yerushalmi* Chagigah* 2, 2 does not list this point among the controversies raised before the era of Beit Hillel* and Beit Shammai*, for in this matter the majority opinion was always adopted[9]. By contrast, there was indeed a controversy regarding the laying of hands*[10]. The distinction is quite clear and this subject will not be developed further.

* * *

I wish on this occasion to express my conviction that, having had a particularly special book of our masters printed at your own expense, you will no doubt invite others to do the same. You will guide and encourage your friends and acquaintances to have the books of our masters published at their own expense in order to make them available to as many people as possible. It is surely unnecessary to specify the great merit, in this matter, of those who act and those who inspire others to act.

I therefore wish, through this letter, to motivate you and invite you to act in this area to the extent of your means. If you invest yourself in this endeavor as is fitting, you will succeed in finding donors to whom this great merit will accrue.

I hope to hear good news from you in all of this and I wish you all the best,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Director of the Executive Committee,

[2] In the Temple, for the service performed there.

[3] And which therefore represents a unanimous view.

[4] The Rebbe notes in a footnote: 'The Parchat Derachim*, chapter 13, discusses this point.'

[5] Before being used for the service, which is forbidden. Now, this would always have been the case had the bread been prepared on the eve of Shabbat.

[6] In the Sanctuary, then in the Temple.

[7] The Rebbe notes in a footnote: 'See also the Rambam, Mamrim*, 2, 1.'

[8] Where the Sanctuary was then located, before the Temple was built.

[9] For, as we have seen, the position adopted could vary from one era to another.

[10] On the animal, on a festival day, before sacrificing it. This act is permitted according to one opinion and forbidden according to the other. This controversy is therefore indeed mentioned in the Yerushalmi.
