To the members of the community and to those

who pray in the house of study,

Greetings and blessings,

I received news of you and of your synagogue with pleasure, through the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, filled with zeal, who also informed me of the public Torah* classes (given in this synagogue).

May Hashem grant you success, so that your synagogue puts into practice the Halachah* of our Torah*, the Torah of life. Indeed, in all matters concerning Torah* and Mitzvos*, one must constantly introduce additions, and our Sages emphasize that "one ascends in matters of holiness." The Torah* furthermore gives the assurance that "to whoever adds (efforts), there is added (blessings)." One thereby obtains from Hashem an increased blessing for all the members, all those who pray in that place, in all their needs and in those of the members of their families, materially and spiritually.

In conversing with the Rav Shlita* about the holiness of the Beis HaMikdash* that one must find in a synagogue — which is a "Mikdash Me'at*" (a small Sanctuary) — and about the importance of a tall Mechitzah* (separation), I was surprised to understand from what he said that there is, in this matter, a certain weakness among some persons who pray in your synagogue.

I am convinced that this weakness is solely attributable to the fact that the importance of this matter has not been properly explained — that it has not been emphasized how much it affects, sooner or later, the continuity of the synagogue and the well-being of its members.

The Rav Shlita* and the other members of the synagogue will surely find the appropriate words to explain all this, so that a firm decision is taken by all that such a separation, in conformity with Halachah*, is a necessity, and that it must be made in the best manner.

Nevertheless, to reinforce all this, I too wish to write a few lines on this subject.

In various domains, one observes the situation more clearly when one applies its terms to one's own person, concretely. Thus, one can imagine that a man of flesh and blood needs a service rendered by someone else, even if this need is not very strong. In general, two people cannot have strictly identical ideas. And one can always find another person who is more highly placed, or even dispense entirely with the service rendered by another.

Despite all this, everyone clearly understands that someone rendering a service cannot first humiliate his interlocutor, act contrary to his will, and then immediately afterward tell him that, following such actions, he wishes to render him a service — and that this is why he is visiting him.

The synagogue is a place of prayer, in which people gather to express their faith that Hashem, Creator of the world Who directs it, satisfies the needs of each person and heals all flesh. Each person, together with the members of his family, wants to be certain that he will obtain the satisfaction of his needs — everything that is necessary for him. One is aware that everything depends on the Holy One, blessed be He, and one therefore goes to the synagogue. There, one asks Hashem: "Hear our voice, have mercy upon us, receive our prayer with compassion and goodwill."

On the other hand, when one who implores Hashem does so in a manner that runs contrary to His will — as He expressed it to us in His holy Torah* — and moreover, when he does everything that provokes the anger of Hashem in a place that is called a house of prayer, when he says to Him: "You asked that a synagogue be arranged in a certain manner, that the prayers be recited in a specific way. We take no account of this and we will show You so. We will go against Your will in order to provoke Your anger. Afterward, we will have sufficient impudence to say to You: Heal us and we shall be healthy, bless this year for us, bless us our Father" —

A brief reflection on all that has been said will leave no doubt as to what the synagogue is in general, and as to the necessity of placing a Mechitzah* in it in particular.

In these days, we lament the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash* and the exile. Now, we affirm that: "It is because of our sins that we were expelled from our land." One can conclude from this that the redemption depends on the rectification of our sins. May Hashem therefore grant each and every one of us, within the entirety of the Jewish people, increased enthusiasm for the observance of Mitzvos* in the best manner, in the personal domain and, all the more so, in public matters.

For there is indeed here a means of sanctifying the Name of Hashem publicly. In this way, one can hasten the true and complete Geulah*, through our righteous Moshiach*, speedily and in our days.

With my blessing for each and every one, materially and spiritually,
