To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

man of many accomplishments,

who devotes himself to communal needs,

Mr. A. Levenstein,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Tammuz. I took note with pleasure of your efforts and your success regarding the Orthodox public in your city, particularly in the area of proper education.

In the era when the Beis HaMikdash* stood, it was said and emphasized that "if there are no kids, there are no goats." How much more so is this the case during the time of exile, in our era, in this orphaned generation, when the question of educating the younger generation occupies a fundamental place and is the foundation for the perpetuation of our people, the nation of Israel.

Every effort and every accomplishment in this direction is therefore justified, even if they demand much strength, energy, and time. Moreover, we have been given the assurance that an effort is never in vain. When one acts sincerely, Hashem grants His success, including in a supernatural manner.

Consequently, I was gratified to read further in your letter that this school — enabling children to develop in an Orthodox environment — is currently growing, and that a large number of hours of sacred studies are being added to the existing curriculum.

I was pleased to read that you do not act merely as someone who participates in the joy of his friend or neighbor (without being directly concerned). You put into practice the teaching of our Sages that "Jews are responsible for one another" (meaning that the action of one concerns all the others). In this way, the more a Jewish community intensifies its fear of Hashem, its Torah* study, and its Mitzvah* observance, the more all Jewish communities scattered to the four corners of the earth will increase their strength and power — "one shall come to the aid of the other and say to his brother: be strong."

With my respects and my blessing of success in your sacred mission to develop education in the spirit of the Tradition of Israel, and in greeting all those who assist you in this endeavor,

במענה על מתכבו מכ"ג תמוז. נעים לי לקרות בו מהשתדלותו וההצלחה בעניני צבור החרדי במחנו הט' ובפרט בשדה החנוך הכשר, אשר אם בזמן שבית המקדש הי' קיים אמרו והדגישו אם אין גדיים אין תיישים, על אחת כמה וכמה בזמן הגלות ובדורנו דור יתום זה ששאלת חינוך דור הצעיר היא בעי' חיונית ויסוד לקיום כל עמנו עם ישראל, וכל התאמצות והשתדלות בזה אף שדורשות כחות מרץ וזמן כדאיות הם, ובפרט שהובטחנו אשר חזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם. וכשעושים באמת נותן השם יתברך הצלחתו וגם למעלה מן הטבע. ולכן שמחתי לקרובת בהמשך מכתבו על דבר התפתחות בית הספר הנותן אפשריות לילדי ישראל להמצא בסביבה חרדית, להוסיף בשעות הקצובות ללימודי קדש יותר מאשר עד עתה בהרבה, ושמחתי לקרות זה לא רק כמשתתף בשמחת חבירו ורעהו אלא גם כמאמר רז"ל כל ישראל ערבים זה בזה, שמזה מובן אשר ככל שיתוסף ביראת שמים בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות בעדה אחת מישראל מוסיף זה כח ועצמה בכל קהלות בני ישראל המפוזרות בארבע כנפות הארץ ואיש את רעהו יעזורו ולאחיו יאמר חזק...

בכבוד ובברכת הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש, להרבות חינוך ברוח ישראל סבא ובפרישת שלום כל חביריו בזה.
