Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Tammuz*. It is a pity that you wait for an unfortunate event to write to me. Indeed, love of one's fellow is a mitzvah* that can be understood logically. Moreover, it is a great principle of the Torah* and even its foundation, according to Rabbi Akiva, and as Hillel the Elder also states. The Tanya* explains it in chapter 32, as does the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek* on the mitzvah* of loving one's fellow. You should therefore have written to me to share joyous events as well. In that way, the letters of the second category would have been less numerous.

At the end of your letter, you write: "I work very hard to maintain a charity fund bearing the name of our martyrs. I am the one who directs it." There is a contradiction between the beginning and the end of this statement. Working for a charity fund cannot be hard, for this provides a particularly strong spiritual satisfaction.

Hard work provides no satisfaction, even if it is very easy, whereas work done with pleasure and willingly strengthens one's spiritual and physical health. If you meditate, even for a few moments, on the verse: "One who takes pity on the poor lends to Hashem," and on the statement of our Sages* that "benevolence is greater than tzedakah*," you will thank Hashem for the enviable lot that is yours each day, since Hashem has chosen you to come to the aid of those in need.

May Hashem grant that for long days and good years you know success in this work of benevolence, in the service of the community. Additionally, you no doubt combine the three pillars of the service of Hashem — Torah*, prayer, and good deeds — on a personal level.

As you request, I will cite all the names you transmit to me at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. Hashem will grant that you tell me good news of all of this.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ד תמוז, וחבל אשר מחכה בכתבו עד שיהי' איזה ענין של עגמ"נ ח"ו, והרי מצד הענין דאהבת ישראל שהיא מהמצות השכליות, ובעיקר כמאמר רבי עקיבא כלל גדול בתורה ויסוד כל התורה כולה, וכמאמר הלל הזקן ומבואר בתניא פרק ל"ב ובספר המצות להצמח צדק מצות אהבת ישראל, הרי צריך הי' לכתוב מכתבים כשיהיו מאורעות משמחים, ועי"ז והיתה מתמעטת הנחיצות במכתבים מסוג הנ"ל...

מה שכותב בסיום מכתבו אשר "עובד אני קשה מאד כו' גמ"ח ע"ש קדושנו ואני מנהל אותו", מובן שבזה הוא סתירה מרישא לסיפא, כי עבודה בגמ"ח אי אפשר שתהי' קשה כיון שעל ידיה מקבלים סיפוק נפשי גדול ביותר, והרי רואים במוחש אשר עבודה קשה היינו זו שהיא למורת רוח אף שקלה ביותר, ועבודה מתוך עונג ורצון פנימי מוסיפה בריאות בנשמה ומוסיפה בריאות בגוף. ולכשיתבונן אפילו לשעה קלה במה שנאמר מלוה ד' חונן דל, ובמאמר חז"ל גדולה גמ"ח יותר מן הצדקה, ישמח בחלקו הטוב בכל יום אשר ההשגחה העליונה בחרה בו לעזור לבני ישראל בעת דחקם. ויה"ר שלאריכות ימים ושנים טובות יצליח בהעמוד דגמ"ח בשירות הצבור נוסף על מה שבודאי עוסק בשלשת העמודים דתורה עבודה וגמ"ח גם בתור איש פרטי.

כבקשתו יזכירו את כל אלה שכותב אודותם על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, והשי"ת יצליחו לבשר טוב בכל זה.
