To the Tzaddik*, Rav* and distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

devotes himself to communal needs, of illustrious lineage,

Rav* Yechezkel Shraga, shlita* (Rav Y. S. Lipschitz Halberstam, Rebbe* of Stropkov; see letters no. 1072 and 1170 regarding him),

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Sivan*, to which were appended four pages of your book Divrei Yechezkel Shraga, which is currently in press. You conclude by requesting the writing of an approbation (for the printing of this book).

Our custom is not to give approbations for books, as I observed with my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. He himself was surely following in this, as in all his other practices, what his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, did, and it is therefore appropriate to maintain this custom.

May Hashem increase your capacity in Torah*, with breadth of spirit. You will succeed in maintaining a pure fear of Hashem, in disseminating the study of the inner dimension of Torah* — which the "faithful shepherd" calls, in the holy Zohar*, an "Tree of Life," as emphasized by the Tanya* of the Alter Rebbe*, in Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26.

Thus will be fulfilled the promise of our Sages* regarding the study of Torah*, who say: "For one who merits it, it is an elixir of life," as explained at length in the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim* of the Rebbe Rashab*. And this enables one to understand the words — both awesome and wondrous — that Rabbi Chaim Vital* develops in detail in the introduction to the Sha'ar HaHakdamos*.

With my respects and my blessing,

As a token of friendship, I will formulate a few remarks on these pages, hastily, due to my many occupations:

The first letter:

One must attach oneself to the Tzaddik*, sometimes even in the strongest manner. This statement can be perfectly understood from what the holy Tanya* of the Alter Rebbe* says in chapter 2 — that one can unify with him as a limb of the body obeys the head and the brain, whatever the instruction one receives. You will also consult what the Mechilta* says regarding the verse: "They believed in Hashem and in Moshe, His servant."

I am surprised that you introduced in such a concise manner, in this letter, the necessity of studying the inner dimension of Torah* — which in these last generations has been revealed through the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, his disciples, and the disciples of his disciples. Now, a deficiency in this study, or even a study less extensive than it could be, delays the redemption and prolongs the exile*, as Rabbi Chaim Vital* emphasizes at length at that same reference. Whoever sincerely meditates on his words will have the hair on his head stand on end.

Since the era of the Baal Shem Tov*, we have the merit of perceiving the clarity of Torah*. Thanks to this, we can understand, at least through parables, its inner dimension. Consequently, what Halachah* says about the other portions of the Oral Law applies here as well — so that one who studies without understanding what he says has not fulfilled his obligation, according to the Magen Avraham*, at the end of chapter 50. You will also consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* at the same reference, and his Likkutei Torah*, Vayikra*, page 5b.

This also applies to someone who lacks this understanding for a reason beyond his control, or to one who does not know that the inner dimension of Torah* can be studied. Nevertheless, one will indeed be rewarded for having pronounced the words. On this subject, you will consult in particular the Pardes*, gate 27, chapter 1. For this lack of knowledge is itself a transgression for which one is liable to condemnation, as it is said: "I committed a transgression because I did not know." You will see what the Shnei Luchos HaBris* says on this subject at the end of Parshas* Balak. And: "One who says that the entire Torah* was given on Mount Sinai except..." (a single point calls into question the entirety of the Torah*).

You know the response that our righteous Moshiach* gave to the Baal Shem Tov*. He told him that he would come "when your wellsprings (of Chassidus*) spread outward." These must indeed spread. One can evidently deduce from this the great obligation, the immense responsibility incumbent upon each person to whom Hashem has granted the ability to influence others in this matter. All must lead their students to these wellsprings — "and from a positive formulation (one can deduce a negative one; the importance of the responsibility underscores the gravity of failing to assume it)," for "when the Temple has not been rebuilt in someone's lifetime (it is as if it was destroyed in his lifetime)."

May Hashem grant that the promise be fulfilled that we will immerse ourselves in these wellsprings, as the Rambam* alludes to at the end of his Laws of Mikveh*: "All shall know Me... The knowledge of Hashem will cover the earth as water covers the sea bed."

The second and third letters:

Regarding the Sanhedrin* (the possibility of constituting one in the present era), various texts indeed discuss this point. Some of those who initially proposed or accepted this idea have now withdrawn. However, a few still propose an equivalent of the Sanhedrin*, but not a Sanhedrin* in the strict sense.

A similar proposal was already introduced in the previous generation. The great figures of the Jewish people firmly rejected it, and the lesser ones, through their fear of Hashem, knew that their voice would not be heard among the people of Israel — who adopt as their rule only the Word of Hashem and will therefore not tolerate inappropriate statements about those who guide Jews on the path of Torah* and mitzvos*, who wage this battle, strengthen the Torah*, and urge others to practice it.

If one addresses Jews by invoking a party, a pogrom, the fusion of the fear of Hashem with the ways of the world — one will necessarily be excluded from the camp. At the time, the great figures of Israel rejected this proposal for various reasons, and how much more must this be so in this orphaned generation. You must understand what I mean.

Concretely, one can observe among those who support this project and wish to establish a Sanhedrin* or its equivalent that the enthusiasm is proportional to the lack of fear of Hashem.

The fourth letter:

Concerning Tzitzis* and Matzos* made by machine (see letter no. 1722 and Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, page 508 on this subject), the Rebbe Rashab*, father of my father-in-law the Rebbe*, permitted their use in cases of force majeure, when refugees from Russia were numerous, starting from 5670 (1910). Tzitzis* were then made by machine after the beginning of the manufacturing process had been initiated by humans. This point will not be developed here.

The opinions of the later Poskim* regarding machine-made Tzitzis* are gathered in the Me'asef Lechol HaMachanos*, chapter 11, paragraph 3, and the Halachah LeMoshe* on the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch*, beginning of chapter 9.

Concerning machine-made Matzah*, you will see the Sdei Chemed*, under the entry Chametz* and Matzah*, paragraph 13, the Haggadas HaMe'va'er published in Piotrkov in 5674 (1914), and the She'arim Metzuyanim BeHalachah* on the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch*, at the end of chapter 110.
