To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs, of many accomplishments,
Rav* Avraham Aharon (Rav A. A. Price),
Blessings and greetings,
I have duly received your letter and the book that accompanied it — the Sefer Chassidim* with your commentary, the Mishnas Avraham. My time did not allow me to consult it as thoroughly as I should have, but as a token of friendship, esteem, and appreciation, I leafed through it, as evidenced by the few notes you will find enclosed.
I thank you very much for this gift, and I would be doubly grateful if you would ask those who handle it to send me your other books as well.
By separate shipment, we have sent you several books that we have published. They will surely interest you, given the importance of the knowledge they contain.
With my respects and my blessing,
General notes:
A. Our era is, unfortunately, very different from previous ones, which were relatively calm, without great upheavals. Nowadays, Torah* and books occupy an important place in everyone's home, including among those who do not understand them (whereas previously, people possessed few books but studied them). And all other objects (in the home, in contrast to the pleasure of possessing a library) are willingly set aside in favor of these books.
Consequently, it is, in my opinion, a mitzvah* and an obligation for all who publish books related to Torah*, mitzvos*, and the fear of Hashem to ensure that these books are user-friendly, that they can be easily transported from one home to another or placed in a small library.
Any deficiency in the practicality of the book may prevent several people from acquiring it, studying it, or reading it. Now, these people must not be excluded. It is said, indeed, that one does not know who will be most capable. And perhaps someone will have children of great elevation.
In fact, the books you publish are beautiful — deeply, since they contain indexes, and also externally, in the choice of typeface and paper. The format of your books, however, strongly contradicts what has just been stated. I have been able to verify all of this concretely by observing the difference in distribution, for books from Kehot* Press, between a large-format edition and the same in a small format.
2. The Bologna edition of the Sefer Chassidim* has spread throughout the Jewish people. It has been accepted and sanctioned by the earlier and later generations. Concretely, any contradiction or modification must therefore be decided according to this edition and not according to other manuscripts, which can serve only for certain verifications — especially according to the view that the Bologna edition is later (than the manuscripts; indeed, it is always the last opinion expressed that must be maintained).
Consequently, the publication of the Sefer Chassidim*, which can also have an impact on concrete action, must follow the Bologna edition, while restoring passages that were censored in it. Nevertheless, it is very useful also to mention the differences found in other manuscripts and to explain them.
* * *
In the testament (of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid*, author of the Sefer Chassidim*), paragraph 1, in your edition:
You will also consult the halachic* ruling of the Tzemach Tzedek*, on the Shulchan Aruch* Yoreh De'ah*, chapter 116, and the responsa* Tzafnas Pane'ach of the Rav* of Rogatchov (the Rogatchover Gaon*), chapter 128.
Must one take into account the fact that the mothers of the bride and groom bear the same first name? You will consult, on this subject, the Sdei Chemed*, under the entry "betrothed," paragraph 10.
In the book, paragraph 1:
You explain at length the nature of a Chassid*. The Mekitzei Nirdamim edition, in the notes on chapter 975, cites several passages from the Talmud* and the early Sages that mention this title. You will see, on this subject, the Sha'arei Kedushah* of Rabbi Chaim Vital*, at the end of the first volume.
However, in my opinion, this discussion is not in its proper place. It belongs, rather, at chapter 975 and the following chapters. At this reference, on the other hand, the author does not at all explain what a Chassid* is and uses the term only figuratively, thereby designating all who fear Hashem, even if they are not Chassidim* according to the precise definition of the term. Indeed, this book addresses all who fear Hashem and honor His Name. It is written for all alike.
You mention the orientation of a Chassid's* heart. But this does not at all explain the nature of the Chassid* and of Chassidus*. The meaning of this statement is, in fact, the following: there is a Chassid* who is great in Torah* and in good deeds, while another Chassid* would like to attain the same elevation but has not received the Torah* from his master or has not sufficiently understood it. In such a case, action is lacking, and he will be punished for this. It is stated, consequently: "This is the reason I wished to write this book" — precisely for such people.
Paragraph 410:
Concerning the reading of the Torah*, you will consult the Tzafnas Pane'ach on the Rambam*, Laws of Prayer, chapter 12.
Paragraph 549:
Concerning the use of the second and third persons in the text of the blessings (all blessings begin in the second person — "Blessed are You" — and end in the third person — "Who has..."), you will consult the Zohar*, volume 3, page 289a, the Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun 39, the Sefer HaBahir*, pages 183-184, and the references cited in the notes of Rav* A. Margolis on that text. To what he says and what you yourself say, one can also add the Shibolei HaLeket Shalem*, chapter 165, the Pri Eitz Chaim*, gate 2, chapter 82, and the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, Parshas* Masei, page 91b.
At the end of the book, paragraph 600:
The transgression in question is, very simply, that of carrying a forbidden food (on Shabbos* — the prohibition of Muktzeh*), consuming it, or undoing a knot. I have seen that the notes of the Mishnas Chassidim* refer to the Magen Avraham*, chapter 638, and the Pri Megadim*, at the same reference. You will also consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the same chapter, paragraph 18.
