Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Tammuz*, as well as to what it contained (presumably a copy of the letter addressed by the Rebbe* to the addressee of the present letter), which you are presumably sending to justify your emotion upon receiving my letter. It seems that this was due to the fact that I was not the signatory (this letter was signed by the Rebbe's secretary). You elaborate various interpretations about this, but this is unwarranted, for none of those intentions were mine, Heaven forbid.

Here is the reason I did not sign that letter. I personally read, of course, all the letters addressed to me, and I personally indicate the appropriate response. As for the signature, the principle adopted is as follows: if the content of the letter requires it — for example, if an urgent request (on the part of the Rebbe*) is formulated, or if it contains an explanation of the revealed Torah* or of Chassidus* — I sign it. Such was not the case with the one I addressed to you, which was merely an acknowledgment of receipt of yours and a means of drawing your attention to the content of the letter addressed to the youth of the Chabad* association, which I had indeed signed. At the end, I specified that it concerns each one of us. It is therefore as if the letter I signed were addressed to you — or indeed, it truly is.

All of this was so obvious to me that the idea of ruling out any other interpretation did not even occur to me. Nevertheless, I see from what you write — and even more from what lies between the lines — that this situation bothers you. That is why I am sending you these few lines.

May Hashem grant that you strengthen Judaism and its dissemination wherever you are. You will do so in good health and with breadth of spirit.

With my blessing,
