Blessings and greetings,
I have duly received your letter of 24 Tammuz*. I am surprised at the length of time between your letters, and also that you made no mention of your participation in the Chassidic farbrengens* of the days of the liberation — the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*, dates of our deliverance and the freedom of our souls — for you surely participated in them. Now, it was decided on high (by the Heavenly tribunal) that what results from such a farbrengen* is infinitely greater than what can be obtained by the angel Micha'el*, as stated in the discourse of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, printed in the pamphlet on Tehillim* (the Kovetz Michtavim found in the Tehillim Ohel Yosef Yitzchak, page 189; see also the letters of the Frierdiker Rebbe*, volume 3, letter no. 784, as well as letter no. 3507).
I thank you for what you wrote to me about the dismantlement of the united religious front (see letter no. 3489 on this subject). It is needless to say what pain and harm result from it. You are correct in saying that my will and my desire to constitute it were very strong. It seems to me that I did everything in my power for it, in a positive manner. For various reasons, I did not wish to intervene in any other way.
You say that I desired a united front to be constituted, at least for the elections. Nevertheless, I emphasized on numerous occasions that this was not the case and that I envisioned it solely for these elections. Indeed, as beneficial as it might have been for this particular occasion, it would have been harmful afterward — not having been technically constructed and resting solely on opinions. To our pain and sorrow, we have been able to observe that such a formation is liable to cause error.
It suffices to see how much the positions of the various parties have fallen compared to what they were just a decade ago. This is true of all the religious parties and therefore how much more so for a coalition of parties.
One of the questions that would have been immediately placed on the agenda after the elections would have been that of participation in the governing coalition. Now, I am certain that if there had been a grouping or a front whose constitution was not merely technical, it would have decided to participate in the coalition — which, in my view, is a prohibition of the Torah*.
The difference (between the obligation to vote and participating in the coalition) is quite evident. One who possesses an identity card (Israeli citizenship) and thereby acknowledges the authorities must participate in the vote (see letter no. 3559 on this subject). By voting, he strengthens the religious situation without thereby assuming responsibility for the laws promulgated in other areas. Conversely, one who participates in the coalition bears responsibility for all the measures that will be adopted. There is no need to say more, for this is self-evident.
You tell me that several of your letters remained unanswered. In fact, they did not call for a response and merely requested that the names of members of your family be mentioned so that they obtain the satisfaction of their needs. This is indeed what I did, and these names were mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
I am surprised that once again, the places where you exercise your influence have ceased sending me their printed materials. I do not understand the reason, and you will kindly verify why this is the case.
With my blessing for giving good news of your personal concerns and of communal affairs,
