Brooklyn

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 18 Tammuz*, in which you tell me that you pray in the synagogue and study hall of the Chabad* Chassidim* in Meah She'arim* (in Jerusalem). You also discuss your Torah* classes.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the statement of our Sages* that "to whoever adds (effort), more is added (blessing)." As you know, the children of Israel are defined as those who experience elevation, ascending from one level to the next. And it is precisely for this reason that the soul descends, "from a lofty peak to a deep pit," as Chassidus* explains. It is only in this way that it can subsequently experience an immense elevation.

Consequently, if one does not use the time and capacity that are granted for this elevation, Heaven forbid, there is not merely the simple loss of an advantage and a profit. In fact, the descent of the soul then becomes purposeless, and unfortunately a fall does indeed occur — "from a lofty peak to a deep pit" — as explained at length in a letter addressed to all last year.

Hashem requires only in accordance with the strength He bestows. Everyone, in their particular situation, therefore receives the means to experience this elevation. And it is known that it is said: "I will drive them out little by little" (the process must be gradual). One should therefore not be frightened if, for a given person — as for the majority of Jews — the advancement is slow. Moreover, it is precisely in such a case that the approach is truly lasting.

You ask me whether one should attach importance to the first name of the son-in-law and that of the father-in-law (when they are identical). One should consult a Rav* on this matter, especially if they are completely identical — which is not the case for you (the two presumably also having different second names). The Tzemach Tzedek* writes in his responsa*, Even HaEzer*, at the end of volume 1, that in such a case there is nothing to fear. You will consult this text.

You ask me about the Derech Mitzvosecha* which, in the section on the mitzvah* of circumcision, cites the writings of the Arizal* according to which: "Each Chessed* (kindness) has the same numerical value as the divine Name Havayah* (which equals twenty-six). And two Chessed* plus two-thirds equals seventy." You note that this calculation is not exact.

An explanation of this matter is found in various texts — in particular, the Sha'ar HaMitzvos*, Parshas* Lech Lecha, and the Eitz Chaim*, beginning of gate 33. Perhaps you do not have these books, so I will reproduce here what the Sha'ar HaMitzvos* says regarding your question:

"The number twenty-six is not a multiple of three. One of the three thirds must therefore be greater than the other two. It is in fact to the majority — that is, to the two-thirds — that this remainder must be allocated."

This text explains the reason according to Kabbalah*. It further specifies how the remainder could be allocated differently and indicates what follows from it.

With my blessing,
