25 Tammuz* 5715

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav* Avraham HaLevi (Rav A. Horowitz, of Jerusalem),
Blessings and greetings,
I am responding to your letter of 3 Tammuz*, in which you tell me that you sent me several fascicles of your book Nesiv Yashar, for which you request my approbation.
You know that our custom, for various reasons, is not to give approbations on books. May Hashem grant you to magnify and embellish the Torah* — the Torah* that leads to concrete action, permeated with the fear and love of Hashem.
The Zohar* and the Tikkunei Zohar* emphasize that the love and fear of Hashem are necessary to bring about elevation, and you know the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed Torah*, according to which one finds an allusion to all of this in the Talmud*, Tractate Pesachim* 50b.
As is my custom, I am enclosing several remarks on these fascicles.
With my blessing for success in all that has been said,
These remarks are formulated on the basis of the statement of our Sages*, in Tractate Bava Metzia* 84a, according to which "one must pose questions in order to broaden the subject of study. But am I not aware that he spoke well?" (the formulation of these remarks does not call into question the value of the work accomplished) — even though ordinarily one does not raise objections against a commentary (since one can maintain two divergent commentaries; only Halachah* must adopt a single conclusion).
Beginning of the first fascicle: The vegetation was not clearly enjoined to divide into species. The Yerushalmi* Kilayim*, chapter 1, paragraph 7, clearly establishes that there is no prohibition — or in any case, no obligation — in this matter, as explained in particular by the Tosafos* on Tractate Chullin* 60a, the Maharsha* at the same reference, and the Torah Sheleimah*.
Beginning of the second fascicle: "From a thread to a sandal-strap." A sandal-strap is also a possession and not a soul. In fact, one can explain that the thread constitutes an adornment or garment of the head, according to Tractate Shabbos*, beginning of chapter 6, whereas the strap is connected to the foot.
Beginning of the third fascicle: Be'er Sheva. In the simple sense, a distinction must be made between the names cited in the verses Bereishis* 21:31 and 26:33, as the Sforno* explains.
Beginning of the fourth fascicle: The camel is connected to Kelipas Nogah* (the force of evil that can know elevation toward the domain of holiness). You will consult the Me'orei Or, under the entry "pig" — also connected to Kelipas Nogah*. Nevertheless, only the latter will be pure (in the future world), but not the camel, the rabbit, and the hare. The pig is the only one to possess the signs that characterize it (it has a split hoof but does not chew its cud), whereas the camel (which chews its cud but does not have a split hoof) is identical to the rabbit and the hare. In Parshas* Re'eh, its name is cited in an independent verse.
Why were the camels omitted? This can be explained as follows:
A) In the simple sense, the emissaries of Yaakov rode camels, as our Sages* say in Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 60, paragraph 14, regarding the verse: "They rode upon camels." That is why it was not necessary to mention them. Despite this, the servant is cited, because an emissary can also be a son, for example.
B) According to the commentary based on the statement of our Sages* in Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*, the camel, through its sign of impurity, alludes to Esav, who is also impure, whereas Yaakov is pure. That is why it is not cited. This can be understood from the explanation of the Torah Or* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vayishlach, according to which Yaakov thought that Esav had already attained elevation. You will consult that text.
Beginning of the fifth fascicle: The commentary on the expression "in these terms" is not exact. On the contrary, this expression alludes to true and perfect elevation, as the Ramban* says regarding the verse Shemos* 6:10.
Here too, the interpretation that should be retained is as follows: it is not simply what I heard, but rather what was said in the clearest manner.
