Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 20 Tammuz*, in which you speak of your laziness, for which you seek my advice.

You will study deeply the beginning of chapter 41 of the Tanya*, at least until "before the King," at the beginning of the second page. You will know it by heart, and from time to time you will repeat it — in speech or, at the very least, in thought. It will suffice for you to meditate on the simple meaning of these lines to completely rid yourself of your laziness.

You tell me that according to some, you have taken only the superficial part of Chassidus* but not its deep content. It is clear that this is better than not even taking the superficial part. Thus, Tractate Menachos*, chapter 8, Mishnah* 5 explains that "the third extraction of the first olive is equivalent to the first extraction of the third olive" (similarly, taking the superficial dimension of the inner teaching of Torah* is equivalent to taking the deep dimension of the revealed teaching of Torah*).

Moreover, you are aware that you have not grasped the deep dimension. Therefore, you will not be content with this situation and you will invest all your efforts — spiritual and physical — to reach the depth. Then, subsequently, you will do more than merely reach it.

The solution is therefore as follows: one must study Torah* abundantly, adopt the practices of Chassidus* even before being able to explain them to yourself or perceive their reason.

I am surprised that you ask me whether you should teach Tanya* to the young men and students. If you have the opportunity to disseminate the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) outward, why be in doubt? One must show eagerness in this matter, and our Sages* say: "Seize and eat, seize and drink" (seize every opportunity that presents itself), for "if not now, when?" If it is said that by giving tzedakah* materially one has "a mind and heart a thousand times more refined," how much more so when this tzedakah* is both material and spiritual.

With my blessing for giving good news of all that has been said,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,

P.S.: I am surprised that you say nothing of the Chassidic farbrengens* that took place during the days of the festival of the liberation (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*.
