23 Tammuz* 5715

Brooklyn

Blessings and greetings,

Your letter of 16 Tammuz*, which followed a long silence, has duly reached me. You discuss the awarding of prizes (to the students of the Yeshivah*) for those who show ardor or participate in prayer.

You must determine what is practiced in other Yeshivos*. One must obviously not give the impression that one is going "from a higher level of holiness to a lower one" (that the standards at the Lubavitch* Yeshivah* are inferior to those in other Yeshivos*). The same applies to vacation periods at the Yeshivah*. And in fact, one cannot be content with merely not being inferior to other Yeshivos*. In your city, people should know what a Chassidic* Yeshivah* is.

You tell me that a certain person suggests that you study the Eitz Chaim* (by Rabbi Chaim Vital, one of the foundational works of the Kabbalah* of the Arizal*). It is clear that in doing so one is indeed studying the Torah* of Hashem, even its inner teaching. Nevertheless, when one studies the same concepts in Chabad* Chassidus*, one understands them satisfactorily and eliminates undesirable interpretations, Heaven forbid. This is not the case when one lacks these explanations (those of Chassidus*). One must then be cautious.

In fact, you yourself reproduce in your letter the Shorash Mitzvas HaTefillah* (in the Derech Mitzvosecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*), chapter 2, citing the Baal Shem Tov*, and this provides an answer to your question about how to reconcile these words of the Baal Shem Tov* with what is reported in various texts concerning the necessity of studying Chassidus*.

You will therefore explain all of this to that person in terms he can understand. You will clearly show him that if he studies the holy Zohar*, he must, even more clearly, also study the teaching of Chabad*, in accordance with the above-cited word of the Baal Shem Tov*.

You recall what the Shorash Mitzvas HaTefillah* says in chapter 7 about the phrase "May the Attribute of Mercy be revealed for us" (which appears in the Yom Kippur* liturgy, despite the fact that it is forbidden to address one's prayer to an Attribute of Hashem rather than to Hashem Himself). I am surprised, for the explanation of this passage appears in various texts — in particular, at the end of pamphlet no. 115, on page 48, in a note (which is reproduced in the Sefer HaMinhagim* Chabad*, on page 64). You will find the answer to all these questions in the references cited there.

You mention the Sulam* commentary on the Zohar*. I have only consulted it for a few moments, and this is obviously insufficient to express an opinion. I do not possess this book. According to what is said, it introduces a specific method of interpreting the Eitz Chaim* and the Zohar*. For our part, we follow the royal path — the one traced by the masters of Chassidus*.

You also ask me about the inner teaching of Torah*, which the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of the second chapter of his Laws of Torah* Study (see also Likkutei Sichos*, 19 Kislev* 5748, paragraph 3), includes in the third of one's study time that must be devoted to Talmud*, whereas according to Likkutei Torah*, Vayikra*, page 5c, it belongs to the third devoted to the Written Law. In fact, it all depends on which part of the inner teaching one studies — whether it involves commentary on the verses of the Written Law or a reasoned analysis (resembling Talmud*). This is what can be deduced from the various formulations found in the Likkutei Torah*, the Rambam*, and the Sifsei Cohen*. The Shulchan Aruch* cites the exact references.

One can further deduce from all this that it is possible to study the inner teaching of Torah* as one would study the decided Halachah* mentioned in the Mishnah* and the Talmud*, which are linked to the spiritual world of Yetzirah* and belong to the third devoted to the Mishnah*.

This allows us to understand what the Pri Eitz Chaim* states in the section on the conduct of study, page 84b, and other texts, according to which the Midrash* and the Haggadah* are linked to Yetzirah*. Despite this, the Likkutei Torah* writes at that reference that the inner teaching of Torah* belongs to the world of Asiyah* and to the Written Law, of which it is even the essential aspect.

The Talmud* is linked to Beriah*, and the decided Halachah* it contains, to Yetzirah*. This is self-evident.
