Blessings and greetings,
I am responding to your letter of 4 Tammuz*, in which you tell me that you have heard much about Chabad* Chassidus* and what pertains to it. You would like to obtain various clarifications on the subject.
You will understand that it is difficult to explain a profound concept in a letter and, even more so, to present the many aspects of a system as broad as this one. You will surely be able to obtain the pamphlets and discourses that are currently available in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. You will find a satisfactory explanation of all this there. You will consult, in particular, the Kuntres Toras HaChassidus* and the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus*.
Nevertheless, reading a book is not always sufficient, and you will therefore endeavor to meet the spiritual guides who teach Chassidus* — those in the holy city of Jerusalem, at the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Lod, and at Kfar Chabad*. Without a doubt, they will provide answers to many of your questions.
You ask me whether a man must seek and find someone who will listen to him. By this you mean someone to whom he will submit. Indeed, if he obtains logical explanations, one cannot say that he submits to the other, since he personally understands why it must be so.
The answer to this question is quite obvious. It is stated by the Mishnah*: "Make for yourself a Rav*" (see letter no. 3394 on this subject). Some make the mistake of thinking that this concerns only the study and comprehension of Torah*. But this is an integral part of the mitzvah* to study Torah*, and one cannot truly use the verb "make" — evoking constraint and submission — in that context. Deeply, one fulfills this precept in the manner you described (that is, by submitting to this Rav*).
According to established principles of teaching, a concrete action (on the part of the master) is stronger than a decided law. Now, in practice, one can observe that all those who adopt this rule scrupulously observe the Torah* and mitzvos*, with fear of Hashem. They do not rely solely on their own understanding, do not ultimately trust their own comprehension. Indeed, to them too applies the statement: "A bribe blinds the eyes of the wise." How much more so (is this the case for those who are not yet wise).
This principle does not mean that in such a case one logically understands that the other is right but acts against one's own perception. In truth, the bribe distorts the intellect, and even while making an error, one is convinced of being right.
Now, this refers to a limited good that is given to a person (to corrupt him). Yet the verdict is altered by it. How much more so when it involves the body and the animal soul*, which includes within it the evil inclination*. It is said, indeed, that "love (of self) covers all faults."
Moreover, as I said, there is already a concrete precedent in this matter. Those who reasoned in that way were unable to withstand the test when it lasted for some time. This was not the case for those who adopted the principle: "We will do and (then) we will understand" — not only on Shavuos* (when the Torah* was given because the children of Israel made this proclamation), but throughout the entire year.
Obviously, I was very surprised to read in your letter the objection that hundreds of Jews reject submission. For this is the argument of those who wish to divert and push others away from the service of Hashem. It is this same objection that was raised before the first Hebrew, our father Avraham. Indeed, the Midrash* says he was called Avraham the Hebrew (Ivri*, which also means "one who crosses to the other side"), because he stood on one side while the entire world was on the other.
Granted, Adam the first man, Chanoch, and Mesushelach were also perfect Tzaddikim*, but they had several disciples. This was not the case, however, in the era of Avraham (who was alone). And it is said: "Avraham was unique. He inherited the land." And whoever studies, even superficially, the Baraisa* cited at the end of Tractate Sotah* will recognize there the situation that prevails at the present time, down to the smallest detail.
You know the rule stated by our Sages* on this subject and in such a case. A person has only what his eyes see, while Hashem probes the hearts. Everyone must consider that he himself and the entire world are on a perfectly balanced scale. Through each action — including the one that seems most insignificant — one can therefore tip them toward the side of good.
Then, the Jews will immediately be redeemed. "The glory of Hashem will be revealed and all flesh together will see (that the mouth of Hashem has spoken)." All the questions one can raise in this matter emanate from the cunning of the evil inclination*, which raises a question, gives it a logical formulation, and even cloaks it in a veil of holiness. And if one listens to it, Heaven forbid: "Today it says, 'Do this'... and (gradually) finally it says, 'Go serve idols.'"
May Hashem grant you success so that you can establish, as soon as possible, a fixed study of the inner dimension of Torah*, whose teachings you will apply to yourself. The condition for being able to integrate our holy Torah* is the acceptance of the principle: "We will do and (then) we will understand." It is then that you will be happy — not only spiritually, but also physically.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
