Igrot Kodesh · Letter 366 — Communal Responsibility and Helping a Fellow Jew

By the grace of Hashem,

24 Iyar* 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav C., the shochet*[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I would like to introduce to you the bearer of this letter, the Chassid who fears Hashem and whose conduct is generous, Rav M. HaCohen[2], whom I have known for many years.

I ask you to please help him, in every way possible, to obtain the official papers he needs, following the advice of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, as he will explain to you himself. It is clear that such an intervention on your part carries no risk.

The Likkutei Torah* on this week's parasha*[3] explains that the admonitions of the Torah are in reality blessings. Thus the verse states: 'One will stumble over the other,' and our Sages explain, in tractate Shevuot* 39a, that 'one stumbles by the other's fault,' for every Jew is responsible for all the others.

Yet there is indeed a blessing here, for this also means that one can come to the aid of another, by virtue of the bond that unites them. One will therefore do so wholeheartedly, for one Jew is also pleasant to another Jew, as our Sages explain[4] and as Chassidut* relates.

The reward in such a case is particularly great, as our Sages say in the Midrash Vayikra Rabbah* on last week's parasha, emphasizing that one who receives gives more than one who gives.

וי"ל עפמ"ש בלקו"ת דפרשת השבוע בד"ה בשברי לכם דדברי התוכחות לפי האמת אינם רק ברכות דאמר הכתוב וכשלו איש באחיו גו' ודרז"ל (שבועות לט, א) איש בעון אחיו דכל ישראל ערבין זב"ז והברכה בזה היא דאחד יכול להועיל לחברו כיון שמעורבין זב"ז ושייכים זל"ז ועושה זה בחפץ לב כי כל ישראל עריבין ונעימים זל"ז - וכשלשת הפי' במרז"ל כל ישראל ערבין זל"ז שהובאו בדא"ח ובפרט ששכרו גדול מאד וכמרז"ל בויק"ר פרשת שבוע העבר יותר ממה שבעה"ב באותו דבר עושה כו'.
