To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

of illustrious lineage, of good conduct,

Rav* Shneur Zalman (Rav Sh. Z. Bespalov; see letter no. 3112 regarding him),

Blessings and greetings,

I have duly received your letter from the day on which the word "good" was said twice (Tuesday, during Creation). Likewise, I was pleased to have news of you from the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Menachem Shmuel Dovid HaLevi (Rav Raitchik), emissary of the Sages* (in California), who tells me that he visited you on various occasions.

Concerning the content of your letter: you wish to write a will, and this is indeed a good initiative — a favorable practice for having long days and good years. May Hashem grant you a long, good, and pleasant life. You will begin to disseminate the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) outward, in your city, and you will know success. There is no doubt that "the outside" exists there as well.

In general, the wellsprings and the Torah* are found in every place, at every time. All that is lacking is the one who strives to achieve their dissemination. The merit of your ancestors and that of the community — which awaits such action — will come to your aid in your city.

May Hashem grant that you accomplish all of this in good health. Admittedly, at first you will need to act out of submission, so that you can introduce this dissemination. But afterward, your efforts will be rewarded. Then, your desire and your pleasure will also come into play (in carrying out this dissemination).

The thinkers note that the beginning of a process is a simple point, and that the same is true of its culmination, its final synthesis. As soon as one has gone past that point, one finds oneself effectively in the middle.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מיום שהוכפל בו כי טוב, כן נעם לי לקבל פ"ש ממנו מהרה"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ מוה"ר מנחם שמואל דוד שי' הלוי שד"ר, אשר כותב לי שביקרו פעמים אחדות.

ובהנוגע לתוכן מכתבו זה, נכון מבוקשו ע"ד עניני צוואה שזהו סגולה לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות, והשי"ת יאריך ימיהם ושנותיהם בטוב ובנעימים ויתחיל ויצליח בהפצת המעינות חוצה בעירו עתה, והרי החוצה בטח יש למצוא גם שמה, המעניות והתורה בכלל הם בכל מקום ובכל זמן, ואין הענין חסר אלא המשתדל בהפצה, וזכות אבותיו וזכות הרבים המחכים לזה במחנו, מסייעתו, ויה"ר שיהי' מתוך בריאות הנכונה, ואף שאפשר בתחלתו יצטרך לקבלת עול בכדי להתחיל ההפצה, הנה לאחר שתעבור ההתחלה יראה פרי טוב בעמלו, ובמילא יתוסף בהחשק והתענוג שבזה, וכבר אמרו החוקרים אשר התחלת ענין (וה"ה לסוף וגמרו של ענין) היא רק נקודה הראשונה, וכשעברו מנקודה זו הרי כבר נמצאים באמצע.
