To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav* Shneur Zalman (Rav Sh. Z. Garelik, Rav* of Kfar Chabad*; see letter no. 3564 regarding him),

Blessings and greetings,

You have surely received, in its time, my letter addressed on the occasion of your birthday.

You are no doubt asked what is to be done when a woman is afraid of becoming pregnant. Several responsa* of the Sages of Hungary adopt a stringent position in this matter. Nevertheless, in various cases, such is not the opinion of the Tzemach Tzedek* in his responsa*, Even HaEzer*, chapter 89, which you will consult. He adopts, indeed, a more lenient position from various perspectives (see also letters no. 3034 and 3713 on this subject). He even permits the use of a contraceptive barrier before the conjugal relation, if the physician requires it.

For the issue at hand is to avoid the well-known transgression (the emission of seed in vain). Now, if the one who is consulted advises withdrawal, the result in most cases — and unfortunately, especially in our generation — will be the emission of seed in vain, Heaven forbid, which runs counter to the very intention of those who adopt a stringent position.

Granted, if there were no means of permitting such a practice, one would have no choice (and would have to prohibit it). However, these responsa* are before our eyes and, in my opinion, there is no reason to wait for the physician to clearly demand it (the use of contraception). The danger is far too great. In this weak generation especially, withdrawal affects the nerves and, more generally, the health — that of the man as well as that of the woman.

One must explain to the physician that "the Hebrews are not like the Egyptians" — that even those who stumble and emit seed in vain regret it afterward, feel bitterness about it, and even sadness. Ultimately, one does not know what may result from it. If all this is made clear to him (the physician), he will surely adopt a more decisive position (advocating contraception).

Consequently, the one who, when consulted, adopts a lenient position — despite the gravity of the problem, clearly established by the revealed Torah* and by Chassidus* — not only does not harm the person who consults him (for very often that person would have acted thus in any case), but furthermore he avoids the other eventuality, which is far more serious, because it enables the person not to resort to the advisor who counsels restraint. This is not the case when it involves placing a barrier, which depends solely on the person, several impure days elapsing in between.

Moreover, all of this will be salutary for physical and spiritual health alike. For someone like you, what has been said will surely suffice.

With my blessing,
