To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Blessings and greetings,

For some time, I have received no news from you — neither about your personal concerns nor about your communal activity. May this silence be a sign that all is well.

You are no doubt aware of our custom on the occasion of the days of the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, commemorating his deliverance following the imprisonment he endured for having given of himself in order to strengthen Torah* and mitzvos*.

In his time, he won a wondrous victory against the forces opposed to Hashem and His Torah*. And the same is true for the subsequent years and for future generations. Indeed, he delivers a clear teaching and shows how the Torah* directs existence, even when straightforward logic does not enable one to understand it.

Our custom consists of publishing a book or brochure that is timely — especially during this period, when one is mobilized in this domain.

I am enclosing the pamphlet that was published for this year. It consists of a portion of a note by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, regarding his imprisonment. As an addendum, one will find the words of the leader of Israel, based on the idea that in all that concerns Torah* and mitzvos*, a Jewish man or a Jewish woman is truly free. Only Hashem is above them.

If remembrance and mobilization are necessary in this matter (see letter no. 3630), demonstrating that the non-Jews do not have free will in the decisions they make — for they are merely "the axe in the hand of the woodcutter" — how much more is this so for Jews, who truly possess free will, as it is said: "See, I have placed before you life and good (as well as death and evil)... and you shall choose life." Now, a request from Hashem instills the necessary strength to fulfill it. This request consists, in the present case, of choosing life. And just as the importance of life is underscored, so too is the importance of the choice.

שלום וברכה!

זה מזמן שלא הגיעוני ממנו כל ידיעות הן בעניניו הפרטים וכן בעסקנותו הצבורית, ויה"ר שיהי' זה סימן שהכל בסדר ובשלום.

בודאי ידוע לו מנהגנו אשר בקשר עם ימי גאולת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, גאולתו ממאסרו על עבודתו במסירת נפש להחזקת התורה ומצותי'.

אשר בשעתה היתה נצחון למופת על כחות המנגדים לה' ולתורתו וגם לשנים ולדורות שלאחר זה משמשת הוראה ברורה, אשר התורה שולטת על המציאות אף אם אפילו אין מוצאים מקום לזה בשכל האנושי.

הנה מו"ל במיוחד לימים אלו ספר או חוברת מענינא דיומא, שבהם עניני התעוררות בזה.

ומוסגר כאן החוברת שהו"ל בשנה זו, חלק מרשימות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר אודות מאסרו. ובהוספה - דברי נשיא ישראל מיוסדים על הנקודה, אשר בעניני תורה ומצות, כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל בן חורין הוא ואין עליו אלא ה' אלקיו.

ואם זקוקים לזכרון והתעוררות בזה - בהנוגע לגלות אצל אינם-יהודים וגזירותיהם הם שאין להם בחירה, ואינם אלא כגרזן ביחד החוצב בו, על אחת כמה וכמה שמוכרחים להתעוררות זו בהנוגע לגלות אצל יהודים, אשר בחירה חפשית להם, וכמ"ש ראה נתתי לפניך היום את החיים ואת הטוב וגו' ובחרת בחיים. ואף שבקשת הקב"ה (שהיא גם עזר וסיוע) הוא - ובחרת בחיים, הרי כמו שמודגש בזה הענין דבחיים - כך מודגש ג"כ שיהי' ובחרת.
