Igrot Kodesh · Letter 365 — Halachic Guidance and Emissary Support

Volume 2 · Letter 200

By the grace of Hashem,

16 Iyar* 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav I. D.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

Enclosed you will find the fascicle published on the occasion of Lag B'Omer*. Without doubt you will make it available to as many people as possible.

I hope you will soon receive a visit from our emissaries[2], the young Rabbanim* Posner and Baumgarten, who will travel to your country and your city. It is no doubt unnecessary to ask you to help them in every way within your means so that they may successfully carry out the mission entrusted to them. I simply wish to urge you to act with eagerness, to help them yourself and to bring in all the people over whom you exert an influence.

I will now respond to the questions you raise in your letter of the eve of Shabbat* Acharei*:

A) In the Haggadah* with a collection of explanations and customs[3], on page 35, it states that the halachah* is set forth in the Shulchan Aruch* and not in the Siddur*. You note that the Alter Rebbe* recorded many laws in his Siddur.

I specifically stated that this concerned only the Seder* practices. One can indeed distinguish two categories of laws that appear in the Siddur:

1. There are long passages that the Alter Rebbe wrote independently, with the intention of incorporating them into the Siddur. These are laws stated very briefly, concerning common matters, addressed to everyone and intended to be known by one who does not have a Shulchan Aruch when the question arises. One speaks then of Seder or Halachot*. The laws relating to the blessing of the Kohanim* fall into this category.

2. There are also customs, rather than laws, that one adopts during prayer or when reciting a blessing. Thus all the rules of Shema Yisrael* are assembled at the beginning of the Siddur.

The Alter Rebbe wrote no independent passage for the Haggadah. He mentioned only the important Seder practices. This is the basis of what I wrote.

B) I wrote in the Hayom Yom* that one searches for chametz* after the Arvit* prayer, without further specification. You note that the Shulchan Aruch introduces many distinctions on this subject.

As I stated in the introduction to that book, my purpose was not to cite the law but the custom of the Chassidim*, based on that of the leaders of Chassidut* and on their teaching. Now, the common practice is to systematically search for chametz after the Arvit prayer.

This can be justified in various ways. The most compelling is one that applies here a manner of acting found elsewhere as well. Indeed, we are accustomed to searching for chametz for a very long time. Now, I did not mention this in the Hayom Yom, for I was not aware of a precise duration in this regard.

C) The Tanya* explains, in chapter 42, that one prostrates during the Amidah* in order to submit to Hashem* through action, having already done so through speech by reciting the Shema Yisrael. You cite tractate Berachot* 21a, according to which 'one does not submit to Hashem's kingship during the Amidah.'

The following explanation may be offered. Every mitzvah* has essential and secondary aspects. The fundamental aspect of prayer is speech, as stated in chapter 38 of the Tanya. Thought comes next, while action is entirely secondary.

Our Sages therefore explain that during prayer, one does not submit to Hashem's kingship through speech, which is its essential aspect. Moreover, the Gemara's* statement is made in the context of Ezra's* decree, which is related to speech, as our Sages specify[4].

This explains the Gemara's astonishment: 'Does Rabbi Yosi consider that one who has lost seed should not put on Tefillin*?!' The necessity to prostrate during the Amidah is therefore in no way related to Ezra's decree.

The deep reason why Ezra's decree applies only to speech is as follows. Our Sages establish a connection between the sanctity of the tongue and that of the reproductive organ.

Please convey my greetings to all your relatives,

M. Schneerson,
