Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of Sunday of Parshas* Balak, in which you ask me what position one should adopt regarding the elections for the Knesset* (see letter no. 3559 on this subject). I am somewhat surprised by this question, for these are the third elections and the position regarding them is well known, since my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, made his opinion known on the occasion of the first Knesset* elections. He said that whoever holds an identity card (Israeli) — and therefore a voter's card — must vote and, of course, give his vote to the most Orthodox parties.

You know the ruling of our holy Torah* that a man must consider himself as being on a perfectly balanced scale, and that the same is true of the entire world. In fact, this is indeed so for elections. Sometimes, a few votes suffice so that, a little later, an undesirable decision is not made, or another one, already in force, is annulled.

In our times, who can allow himself to seek only his own salvation, not to be concerned with the entire community living in the Holy Land, not to worry about the unfortunate regulations that might be introduced in that country?

Moreover, you pay taxes to all the authorities, which is a means of directly financing their actions. You have accepted that an identity card be issued to you, and when you mail a letter, you must know that the price of the stamp you pay goes to the government, which uses these sums for various purposes.

I am even more surprised that you say nothing of your study of the inner dimension of Torah* — of Chassidus*. As I have already written to you previously, this is a fundamental necessity, as our holy Torah* specifies. You will consult, in this regard, the laws of Torah* study of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 2, paragraph 10.

Indeed, every person is obligated to organize his study so that he learns, at least once in his lifetime, the entirety of the Oral Law. It is therefore astonishing and surprising that one can be aware of this fact yet completely set aside the inner teaching of Torah*. There is no need to say more, so appalling is this.

I do not know what your exact intention was in writing to me. I can only make suppositions on the subject, and that is why I do not wish to leave your previously cited question without a response. But in any case, forget politics — study the inner teaching of Torah*, every day. May Hashem inspire you to do all of this as soon as possible and with a whole heart.

במענה על מכתבו מיום א' פ' בלק, בו שואל איך להתנהג בענין הבחירות להכנסת.

ולפלא קצת השאלה, כי הרי זהו בחירות בפעם השלישית, וידועה העמדה הנוגע להן, וכמו שפרסם דעתו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בבחירות בפעם הראשונה לכנסת, שכל אחד ואחד שלוקח תעודת זהות, ובמילא יש לו רשות לבחור, ישתתף בבחירות, ומובן אשר יצביע בעד המפלגות היותר חרדיות.

וכבר ידוע פסק תוה"ק לעולם יראה עצמו שקול וכו' וכל העולם שקול, ובענין בחירות, הרי לפעמים ע"י קולות בוחרים מתי מספר יכולה להשפיע במשך הזמן שלא תתקבל איזה גזירה או גם לבטל מהגזירות הקיימות כבר, ומי הוא זה בימינו אלה היכול לומר אני את נפשי הצלתי, והצבור באה"ק ת"ו יהי לו אשר לו, ואם יגזרו גזירה מה לו ולענין זה, ובפרט כשבבת אחת עם זה הרי משלם הוא מסים לכל המשרדים שזהו סיוע ובאופן ישר להענינים, לקח תעודה שלהם וגם הוא עצמו הרי כשכותב מכתבים בודאי יודע שמה שמשלם בעד הבולים נכנס למשרד המסים וממעותיו נלקחים ג"כ לענינים השונים ומשונים.

ולפלא גדול עוד יותר שאינו מזכיר ע"ד לימודו בפנימיות התורה תורת החסידות שכתבתי לו מאז, אשר לימוד החסידות זהו חובתו העיקרית, וכפי פסק תוה"ק (עיין הלכות תלמוד תורה לרבנו הזקן פרק ב' סעיף יו"ד) שעל כל אחד לסדר לימדו באופן שיוכל ללמוד כל התורה כולה שבע"פ עכ"פ פעם אחת, שמזה מובנת התמי' והפליאה על מי שנודע לו עד"ז ואינו עוסק כלל בחלק דפנימיות התורה, ואין להאריך בדבר המבהיל.

והנה אינני יודע ברור כוונתו במכתבו אלי, ורק בדרך השערה, ולכן אינני רוצה למנוע המענה שלי על שאלתו הנ"ל, ובכן אופן - יסיח דעתו מענינים של פוליטיקה, ויקבע שיעור לימוד גם בפנימיות התורה בכל יום ויום , ויה"ר אשר יערה עליו רוח ממרום לעשות זה בהקדם ובלבב שלם.
