14 Tammuz* 5715
Brooklyn
Blessings and greetings,
We have just experienced the days of the liberation, the 12th and 13th of Tammuz*. It is therefore surely unnecessary to specify that the enthusiasm inherent to these dates must be preserved throughout the entire year. And it is equally superfluous to say what must follow from it. Indeed, this concerns the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. The emotion and the effect it exerts must therefore be in accordance with his will and his teachings.
This allows us to provide an answer to the objection you raise in your letter of 12 Iyar*. You have adopted a principle according to which "for my name, Hashem will be honored" (the addressee of this letter considers that he is obligated to put into practice a teaching of the Rebbe* only when it is personally addressed to him). And, so that there be no doubt about your intentions, you underline one of these words (presumably "my name").
Such an attitude is not in accordance with what was said above. Consequently, after the 13th of Tammuz* of this year, you will change your position. Indeed, such a remedy is indispensable for Chassidim*. Were this not the case, and were you to observe Who pronounces the words of the verse — "For My Name, Hashem will be honored" (Hashem Himself pronounces these words; how then can one apply the terms of this verse to one's own person?) — you would not have had the same attitude, even without this remedy.
In reality, what is this about, and who is concerned here? Micha'el*, the greatest angel, the one who records in writing the merits of Israel and who desires that one act in a disinterested manner and not "for my name." In such a case, he can record a much greater merit — not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively.
On the other hand, when I write to the Chassidim* of the Holy Land, or in my letters addressed to all, I allude to actions and not to persons. Obviously, these must be concretely carried out, and if a given person introduces a personal interest in the matter — the pursuit of a reward in this world, in the next world, or both at once — it is clear that I will not take offense at this.
Nevertheless, if I am asked in order to receive an answer and to act accordingly, I will then consider whether there is reason to prefer the one who acts "for my name" or the one who does so for the name of Lubavitch* in general — which can, moreover, take different forms. Thus, for example, one can act for the good of the Chassidim*.
